William McDowell Obituary

William Gregory “Greg” McDowell, age 71, died September 16, 2025, at his home, J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center located in Morganton, NC, surrounded by loving staff.

Born March 9, 1954, in Rowan County, he was the son of the late Ada Hoffner Oates, step-father, John F. Oates, and father, William “Bill” E. McDowell. Greg had an enchanting smile that would light up the room. He was a quiet and pleasant man to be around. He enjoyed interacting with those who loved and cared for him. Greg loved outings, all of the special events that occurred over the years at his home, and the many jobs he held through the years.

The family wishes to extend a heartfelt gratitude to all who lovingly cared for Greg over his lifetime there at JIRDC in Morganton. Their love and attention to details helped Greg live a long life full of dignity and joy.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 20, in the cemetery at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Salisbury, NC, with Rev. Dr. Jarrod Lanning, officiating.

Memorials may be made to Assure the Future, J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center, 300 Enola Road, Morganton, NC 28655.
