ALICE BOYACK Obituary

Rev. Dr. Alice S. Boyack 1921 ~ 2010 Alice Boyack died peacefully on October 30, 2010. She was born July 22, 1921 in Philadelphia, PA. to Fred C. and A. Ruth Batten Selby and raised in Lansdowne. She received a B.A. from Wilson College, an M.A. from the Univ. of Chicago, studied at Chicago Theological Seminary and got a PhD from the Divinity School of the Univ. of Chicago. She married James D. Boyack of Montana. Jim and Alice taught at Philander Smith College, a Methodist college for African Americans in Little Rock, AR. In 1959 the Boyacks moved to Salt Lake City to teach at Westminster College. Jim was professor of philosophy and Alice taught history and religion. She was the director of Christian Education at Christ Methodist Church, and campus minister and advisor to pre-theological students. In 1973 she was ordained as a United Church of Christ (UCC) minister. She was moderator of the Utah Association of the UCC, and also served on the Church & Ministry Committee. She often preached at several Protestant churches in Utah. Alice received many awards, including Outstanding Woman of Utah in the field of Religion, and the N. Eldon Tanner Memorial Christian Service Award from the Westminster Institute of LDS Religion. She was honored at a Women of Achievement Banquet given by "Network" magazine. After retiring in 1987 she loved volunteering at her church and spending time with her grand-daughters. Alice was a source of inspiration for many. She was a person of strong faith but never pushed her beliefs on others. It was important to her to help people of different backgrounds come together to find common ground. She also enjoyed hosting a weekly book discussion group, and was a devoted fan of the Utah Jazz. Preceded in death by her husband Jim, Alice is survived by her daughters Elizabeth (Betsy) Willis of Eugene, Ore; and Jean Boyack of Salt Lake City; granddaughters JoAnne Brown and Amanda Minter, son-in-law James Brown, adopted granddaughter Lindsay Alsop, and great-grandchildren Delaney and Tasher Brown. Her love of HUCC will be carried on by her granddaughter Amanda, and her daughter Betsy promised to keep watching the Jazz. A memorial service will be at Holladay United Church of Christ, 2631 Murray-Holladay Rd., on Saturday, November 6 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Southern Poverty Law Center (www.splcenter.org) or Holladay United Church of Christ.

Alice will always hold a special place in my heart. She always had a kind word, love in her heart and a song in her voice. Growing up, she would often pick me up so I could play with her grand-daugher (My best friend), JoAnne. She treated me as though I was her grand-daughter as well. She was a wonderful woman and will never be forgotten.

My love and prayers to her incredible family.

Betsy and Jean. I am so sorry for your loss. My earliest memories of your mother was from Christ Methodist Church but my fondest were during my years as a student at Westminster. She was the most open-minded and inspirational person that I have ever known. Alice introduced me to "mocha" (in lieu of coffee) in her office over some long discussions. Both your parents were favorite professors of mine. Jan (Glodowski) Jones.

Alice was a wonderful woman and I'm glad I had the opportunity to know her. I enjoyed her musings and sense of humor in the sermons she gave occasionally at Holladay United Church of Christ. The HUCC community will definitely miss her. My prayers are with Alice's friends and family.

Alice and Jim were wonderful parts of HUCC 20 years ago while I was there and I'm sure they both still were to the very end. HUCC has lost the last half of a wonderful couple.

Alice has been an inspiration to me, as well as many others, especially women. She has been an example of how to live with a completely open mind and heart. She has shared her wisdom and gifts generously. Through Bible studies, women's groups, sermons and friendship, my life has been enriched by knowing Alice.

Alice was one of the great theologians. Always there to mentor, debate or collaborate, she taught me a great deal about Jesus and a great deal about myself. She was an incredibly spiritual and learned woman of great strength, and a true pioneer for women's and GLTB rights. Alice takes with her a huge wealth of knowledge. I will miss her every Sunday, and well beyond, Rest in peace Alice, and say hi to God for me; I'm sure that with you she is well pleased! "Alright I've said enough, I'll sit down now."

My grandma was an inspiration to me in every way, and much of what I try to do and who I try to be has always been in honor of her. I will miss her sense of humor and the way she always cared so much about even the mundane things I had going. She made the world a better place for everyone.

I was one of Rev. Boyack's students, graduating in 1983. Alice was an incredible person and an outstanding professor/adviser. My heart will always hold a place for memories of her. She was an intelligent, warm and caring human being, and an excellent ambassador who carried forth the love of God in more ways than I could ever recount. God Bless you, Alice. Rest in eternal peace.

On behalf of some of Alice's colleagues from her years at Westminster College...a fine teacher, a spirited intellect, a warm human being and a great wit. A memorable photographic portrait of Alice and Jim hangs in "Emeritus Alley" on the second floor of Converse Hall. Warmest regards to Jean and the rest of the family.
