Andrew Glad Obituary

Andrew (Andy) Glad
"Man of Integrity"
Andrew Clyde Glad died September 9, 2018 surrounded by loving family. He was born April 25, 1932 in South Salt Lake City, Utah, the son of Clyde D. Glad and May Thomson. He was the eldest of a family of 9 children. After graduation from Granite High School he was preparing to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, when he was drafted into the military to serve our country in the Korean Conflict. He met Janet Zabriskie upon his return after his service and they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on May 17, 1956. He then attended LDS Business College where he received a degree in Accounting. During his working years he was always seeking knowledge and attended UVU and Westminster College graduating with his MBA degree.
He served his community in many ways: over 20 years in the Boy Scouts of America - where he was awarded the Silver Beaver, as a volunteer police officer, volunteer fireman - where he and his friend William Clough became the first firefighters to organize the Sandy City Fire Department as a Professional department and it was no longer a volunteer program. As Assistant Fire Chief (35 years) he taught Cert Classes, and was instrumental in organizing the EMT and Paramedic services for Sandy City. He continued his volunteer activities through the Sandy Exchange Club, and taught Train Safety to hundreds of Student Drivers for the Operation LifeSaver Program. He was also invited to go on the Honor Flight for World War II and Korean War Veterans.
He served in many positions in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints - 15 years as a Ward Clerk with 3 Bishops, as a Bishop's Counselor, and many years as a Temple Ordinance Worker. He had a deep and abiding testimony of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
He is survived by his wife: Janet - over 62 years together, 3 children - son Robert Glad (Diane), son Steven Glad (Nancy), daughter Connie Speters (Lynn), 10 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren, 2 sisters and 4 brothers.
Services are as follows: Viewing Sunday, September 16, 2018 at the Mount Jordan 3rd Ward building at 8950 S. 400 E., Sandy, Utah from 6:00 p.m thru 8:00 p.m. Funeral Monday, September 17, 2018 at the Mount Jordan 3rd Ward building - Viewing from 9:30 a.m to 10:45 a.m. with funeral beginning at 11:00 a.m. Interment at the Sandy City Cemetery. www.goffmortuary.com

Dear Janet and Family,

So sad to lose yet another good friend and neighbor. I got to know Andy through Sandy Fire as well as the dearly loved neighbor of my in laws.

I saw Andy as a quiet, soft spoken giant-always thinking of a better way to do things. May you all find peace and love of the Plan of Salvation in the Days Ahead.

I have such fond memories of my cousin, Drew. I was a single Mom for along time and he would always check in on me to see how things were going. I was an emergency nurse at Alta View Hospital in Sandy, Utah. Drew was a Sandy City Chief of police. I would see him often when he would stop in the ER. He always asked how we were doing and would be concerned for me and my little family. The worst ER accident, I was the nurse for, he was there with me. He could tell I was having a very emotional time with the caring for this particular patient and family. He walked in the patients room and statedit will be allright. We can do this together . His strength and assurance was all I needed to continue with my duties as a professional. I will never forget that day with Cousin Drew. I will always cherish the relationship we developed over the years. He has a wonderful wife and a beautiful family. Drew, you will be missed until I see you again. Love, your Cousin RaNae.

"FINAL ALARM"
Rest now my brother firefighter
Lay soft your suffering back
Rest well and forever
Your memory shall not lack
Rest your tired hands
Wipe clean your weary brow
Rest with St. Florian
Your spirit now endowed
Rest here your heart
We know you gave your all
Rest easy, you've done your part
and now you've answered your last call
As we ring the final bell.

Dear Janet and Family,
Feels like I've known you all my life. As members of the old Sandy 5th Ward we shared a lot of common experiences and relationships with good people. I am living out of state temporary and will not be able to attend the funeral or would surely be there. May the Lord's blessings comfort your good family at this temporary separation and the days to follow.

Andrew was a happy great guy. I always remember how he was the best firefighter. He did a presentation in my ward in Sandy about fire safety.
He was a nice cousin and we will miss him.
