Betsy Christopher Obituary

Betsy (Bentley) Christopher RN, BSN, MSN Ed
Aug. 21, 1952 ~ Aug. 30, 2016
Beloved daughter, sister, niece, cousin, wife, mother, nurse, teacher and especially cherished friend Betsy passed from this life as the result of a (currently) incurable brain cancer. Born to Floyd and MaryLou Bentley in Aurora, Illinois, Betsy was a wonderful child. She graduated from West Aurora High School and attended Colorado State University. She transferred to The Evanston School of Nursing in Evanston, Illinois where and became a Registered Nurse. License in hand, she headed west to California in her big blue Chrysler Imperial and began work at the Long Beach VA Hospital. Eventually she moved to the San Diego area where she found employment in a variety of hospitals and nursing settings. Always striving for self improvement, she earned her Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from the University of San Diego. She lived in Pacific Beach and her favorite town, La Jolla. In the early 80's she moved to Salt Lake City and worked at hospitals there, eventually specializing in Surgical Nursing. Once again feeling the allure of sunshine and beach sand she moved back to San Diego where she happened to go on a blind date. While the date didn't lead to much, she met her date's roommate, Chris, who was to become the love of her life. They spent the next 32 years together.
As a Navy wife, Betsy created warm, inviting, lovely homes in ten different cities and seven different states. She loved the adventure of going to new places. Industrious as ever, she worked in every town she lived. Along the way, she produced and raised two marvelous daughters. She earned advanced certifications in health and fitness, started her own business and was most proud of receiving her Master's Degree from Westminster College in Utah. She began teaching at SLCC in 2008 and absolutely loved her job as an Associate Professor of Nursing. Betsy made friends so easily; good , solid friends. If one could use but one word to portray her, that word would be: laughter! To know her was to be her friend. To be her friend was to laugh! Her sense of humor was wicked but never mean-spirited or at the expense of another. Betsy was the most considerate and genuine person one could ever hope to meet. One in a million. Betsy and Chris spent half their lives together; great years. Yet sadly, Betsy succumbed to the effects of the malignant tumor that had robbed her of so much in the last two years, she had turned just 64 a mere nine days before. A cruel and insidious disease, Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) is currently incurable. It can strike anyone. The cause is unknown. GBM is now the mostly deadly cancer for children. With this terrible disease there is no "battle", there is simply accommodation, adjustment to the steady indignities it inflicts and, endurance. Betsy endured as she had always lived; with optimism, grace, and courage.
She is survived by her mother MaryLou Bentley, husband John (Chris) Christopher, daughters Emily and Madeline, and an extended, loving family. She would appreciate a gift or donation in her name to the Huntsman Cancer Institute and/or Community Nursing Services Hospice of Salt Lake, good people who do their very best, often against very bad odds. There are promising new therapies within reach, they just didn't arrive in time for our darling Betsy.
A Farewell Gathering in her honor will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 15th at Wasatch Presbyterian Church, 1700 South and 1700 East.

I heard a number of years ago about the passing of Betsy. It made me very sad and I was not as computer savvy in those days to know that this site existed. Today I was going through some pictures and found some of Betsy and Laura and Kelly and Cookie and Debbie and Sarah and Denise and me. I´m thinking they must be from second or third grade. All of us went to grade school together and high school together. I still think of the time when Cookie and Betsy, the nurses, and I went out for drinks, and Betsy was talking about a baby that had been born and describing it in detail. It did not survive. It was my sister. She was devastated when she figured out what it just happened, but I remembered being grateful that I knew the condition the baby had been in. She was always so wonderful, full of life and love for the world. The girls got a couple of chances to get back together over the years that was a special group of friends. I don´t know if the family will see this, but no, she is remembered and loved. Lynne Jebens.

Betsy was the youngest of the seven cousins who grew up together in Ill. She didn't get to do some of the things that we older ones got to do as a group, but when she was finally old enough she added a sense of wonder and joy that enhanced the experiences for the rest of us. I loved her and I miss her. She was the so full of happiness and exuberance it is hard to believe she is no longer with us. My love to Chris, Em, and Maddie.

Lost tack of Betsy along the way. I was shocked to learn of her illness. When wanting to reconnect with her I was very saddened to know she was taken way to soon. I will always remember Betsy as an upbeat

Betsy and I were born. 3 days apart and had a life long friendship from birth thru high school and beyond. The last time I saw her was at our 25th high school reunion. She was one in a million..her heart and soul love of life and laugher will be with me for all of my life. Anyone out there from class of 1970 please contact me! Am trying to get in touch with Michael Diederich..Steve Marshall...John Thompson..Peggy Goldman...Laura Barton...and any of the old group from high school please contact me. I just found out about Betsy last week. My sincerest condolances to mary lou and family. My phone is 714_916_2280. Would love to hear from any of you. Betsy, you were such a joy to know and work with. I loved our talks, your laugh, being in the office next to yours, how you loved Tootsie Rolls (I always saved them for you), and how you just loved life itself. You were beautiful, exuberant and energetic. I cherish your memory, dear friend. Until we meet again.

Betsy was always so nice to talk to. And as you stated, she was always smiling which helped those around her to smile a lot. I have thought of her a lot after she left SLCC, and I am so saddened by the fact that she has gone on without us. I will always think of her and her tremendous love of people and life. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. My sympathies go to her family and my thoughts of her will always be treasured.

Oh my God! Such a loss too big to and so large for this world. Bentley was my best friend in middle school. We spent every week end together singing Beatles songs and laughing our heads off. This went into Aurora Illinois's West High where we had a group of 8 of us who laughed, all the way thru school.. We shared a locker that was the hang out for all us girls to catch the gossip and news. She always had us laughing. Infamous were her peanut butter, mayonnaise, and banana sandwiches after school. She always wore red lip stick at her mother's insistence. I know that everybody felt like her best friend. That is just who she was. My heart is broken but my memories will forever remain.
