Beverly Cook Obituary

Beverly White Cook

July 17, 1929-March 31, 2023

Sandy, Utah -Beverly was born in SLC, Utah into a family with a pioneer history going back to the early Mormon immigration into the valley of the Great Salt Lake. Her parents were Luella Luck White and Paul White (of Holladay, UT). She was the eldest of five children.

Beverly attended Granite High School where she caught the eye of a visiting sailor who later became her husband, Albert Martin Cook (of Taylorsville, Utah). Their young family was later stationed in CA, TX and back to Utah where both Bev and Al completed degrees at the University of Utah. Working on their farm in Taylorsville they raised three children before Bev headed into her professional career.

Working in the Granite School District (SLC) for most of her career, Bev began as an elementary teacher and quickly was promoted to become the coordinator of Language Arts leading programs for teaching creative writing throughout the State. She was also instrumental in developing a program used by teachers to individualize student learning. During this time, she completed a Master's Degree through Utah State University. Finally, she served as a school principal before retiring.

Bev loved to make scrapbooks, paint and wrote hundreds of poems often winning contests and publishing accolades.

Bev led a very active life. She was an expert trap and skeet shooter, often topping Al's scores (to his delight). She loved to hike, travel, cross-country ski, golf and play cards. Well into her late 80's she was often seen walking her beautiful German Shepherd, Pal along the Jordan River Parkway. She kept strong ties with her family and her group of beloved friends, the Ditzy Chicks.

Perhaps her greatest joy was having her hands in the earth and turning a spade in the soil of her stunning gardens. She was thrilled to see the return of the hummingbirds each Spring and the visitors at her kitchen window feeder. She loved her home and yard in Sandy and maintained her independent living into her 90s.

Beverly outlived her husband, Albert M. Cook; her brothers, Richard (Bud) White, Monte White; her sister, Terry Peterson; her son, Lance Elliot Cook; and grandson, Justin Rich.

"Sister, Bev, Mom, Gramma, GG" will be missed by her younger brother, Larry Vaughn White; daughters, Kristine Rich (David) and Jenny West (Canada); her grandchildren, Shannon Boseman (Gregg), Megan Boseman (Shelby) and Cassidy West (Sasha Z.) ; great grandchildren, Samuel Rich, Kristalyn Boseman Clinton, Aubrianne Boseman Squires, Aidan Boseman, and the Texas Bosemans, Rhiannan, Alexis, Lance, Madison, Piper; and a number of young great great grandchildren.

An intimate and private gathering will celebrate Beverly's 93 years.

In lieu of flowers the family invites you to make a donation in Beverly's name to your favorite not-for-profit group or charity.

Thank you for loving her and for receiving her love.

Beverly was my grandmother; I called her "gramma". It's difficult for me to articulate what gramma means to me because she was an exceptional writer. Her passion for poetry inspired me. Furthermore, her cursive handwriting was immaculate. She wrote cards for every birthday, holiday, and special occasion; I still have them.. or the most meaningful ones at least!
For most of my life, we lived many miles from each other in different countries, but she always found a way to connect and express her love even when I wasn't equally as good at doing the same.

She came to visit us at each new home we lived in throughout my childhood (there were more than a handful), from Colorado, US to Bowen Island, BC and even Côte d'Ivoire, Africa. It was our tradition to visit her in Utah for Christmas. She loved decorating; you could tell from the moment you stepped foot in her home what season/holiday it was because upon every surface would be some sort of festive arrangement.

She loved having the independence of her own home after moving away from "the farm" which she and my grampa shared. I remember my grandparents waking up before the crack of dawn for irrigation day to run the water from the canal to their property; it was a wonderous thing for me as a young child to play in a field beneath a foot of water. I'd run and jump on the bubbles emerging from the ground below as gramma and grampa sat on the patio or waded in tall rubber boots. They had raspberries, a big shady apricot tree, lamas, a pair of his and hers tractors, and always German Shepards - most recently gramma's beloved "Pal".

I don´t remember where the nickname "Buzy Bee Bev" originated, but I imagine it runs along the same lines as the phrase "pulling a Beverly" aka clearing the dishes before the consumer/guest was completely finished. I will carry on this legacy.
Gramma was kept occupied in her later years by gardening, scrapbooking, writing award-winning poetry, puzzles, and classic games including Dominos and Poly Tail Canasta. It wasn't a visit to gramma's without a few games of cards.
Gramma, for every hummingbird that crosses my path, I will remember you. You will forever stay with me in my heart. I love you always.

Jenny,
I was saddened to hear about the passing of your mother. I will always remember her as the nicest lady in the neighborhood. My mind has been flooded with fond memories of my youth as I mourn the passing of your mother. Taylorsville was a great place. May you and your family be comforted at this time. My prayers are with you.
