Calvin Bray Obituary

Calvin Howard Bray

4/24/1946 - 9/4/2023

Overton, NV-Calvin passed away peacefully on Monday, September 4th in Las Vegas, Nevada surrounded by his loved ones Jehiah Bray, Jarryd Bray, Larry Bray, and Marta Leaming.

Calvin was a brilliant creative and carpenter. With allies in tow, he built a gorgeous 18 ft wooden speed boat called The Carioca, live-edge wooden clocks, tables, cabinetry, and his retirement house he was building upon passing. He was an adventurer and a strong willed man. He journeyed from innovative business venture to the next, from creating Braybodies, to Real Estate, to horticulture, wherever the inspiration would take him. He was a Vietnam Veteran and was full of faith in his religious traditions and in his vision for creating his retirement home, his oasis, his heaven on earth. This vision gave him drive, hope, and joy during his final years as he spent them building that very dream off grid on raw land in southern Nevada. He never stopped working and never gave up hope in his vision regardless of the trials and tribulations that came his way. He kept standing back up and continuing to shift and work towards what he knew was not only his dream and vision, but the sense of purpose he found that was keeping him alive.

Sometimes we can find ourselves inside of a sentimental cage when attaching to that which does not serve. One thing we can all learn from Calvin is that letting go of material things and keeping our sentimentality in check can be the key to unlocking our own gates and when we do so we can keep moving and growing with more lightness and grace until our dying day.

Calvin is survived by his sons, Jehiah Bray, Jarryd Bray (Machele), Jason Downard (Tina); siblings, Larry Bray, Marta Leaming, Leslee Bingham; grandchildren Max Bray, Canyon Downard, Skyler Downard; nephews Ryan Bingham, Justin Bingham (Ana), Brandon Kenning. He is preceded in death by his parents, Dudley Martin Bray and Lucy LaFaun Howard Bray and infant daughter Stacey Bray.

His remains will be interred at the Utah Veterans Cemetery Memorial Park 17111 West Bluffdale, Utah 84065.

There will be a celebration of life held at a later date. If you'd like to attend, please reach out to someone in the family for details.

His family says goodbye with gratitude and love for having brought such inspiration, strength and wonderful new humans into this world. We love you Calvin, Brother, Dad, Uncle, Grandpa. Until the next boat ride in the sky. Godspeed.

I have good memories of Calvin. Climbing Lone Peak, primitive camping in the Deep Creek Mountains, boating at Flaming Gorge and Lake Powell, sharing Navy Vietnam stories and being brothers in unity against a top heavy overlording hierarchical cult we somehow got caught up in for a while. I always liked his vocabulary, especially when he would say, "Mercy" when referencing something ridiculous. Although we drifted apart over the years, I am appreciative of knowing him and his friendship.

I am grateful for the experiences I had the last 5+ years with my dad in visiting him at his property and watching and helping him build his retirement home on raw land. We were able to connect on a new and beautiful level where I saw him grow into his joy and I loved all the boating time we got to have just the two of us. I love all the deep conversations we got to have out there getting to know one another, with, as if almost magically, no one else on the lake. I love you dad.

I have not heard Calvin's name in more than over 60 years. If this is the same Calvin Bray who attended grade school at Geneva School in Orem Utah, then we were classmates in 5th and 6th grades and we played together in Little League baseball for the Geneva Indians. He was our Catcher. Please accept my condolences and best wishes.

Calvin was very creative and was part of my photography business for a number of years. The "Braybodies" he created were a big hit! He was a skilled carpenter and learned how to take photos quite well. He had the cutest nick names for his kids, Jehiah and Jarryd. They were the lights of his life!!
