Colleen Evans Obituary

"Do not go gentle into that good night ~ Rage, rage, against the dying of the light." ~ Dylan Thomas

Colleen was born January 22, 1927 in Preston, Idaho, the youngest daughter of Ray Van Noy and Carol Christensen. America was deep in the middle of the Great Depression - Colleen's parents divorced shortly after she was born.

She passed away September 22, 2018 in Salt Lake City, her home of 83 years. She was 91 years old and died of natural causes.

Colleen was a brilliant school teacher and enjoyed the company of many friends through her long life. More than anything Colleen was most proud of her six accomplished and independent children.

She is survived by Janice Evans, Jayne E. Reznick (Mike), Reno, NV; Thad V. Evans, Tracey Evans, Shauna E. Douglass (John) Reno, NV; Brooke Evans, Reno NV. She has one grandchild, Ashley Farrell, and one great-granddaughter, Dylan, Sacramento, CA. She is also survived by her brother, Richard R. Brown and his wife Shirley, and their children and grandchildren.

At her request, there will be no funeral or memorial services. In lieu of flowers, her family requests donations to the Moran Eye Institute.

When Colleen was eight years old, her father married a remarkable woman named Elsie Hogan Van Noy. Colleen was reunited with her two older brothers and they lived in a big house on "C" Street in Salt Lake City's Avenues.

Colleen grew very close to her "Aunt Elsie" and credited her stepmother with giving her joy and security she had never known as a little girl.

She graduated from East High School in 1945. She put herself through the University of Utah employed as a clerical worker for the Salt Lake City Police Department. In 1945, Colleen earned a dual certificate in Education and a degree in Composite Home Economics.

Colleen was a school teacher when she met T. Max Evans following his mission for the Mormon Church in South Africa. They were married in April 1951 in the Salt Lake Temple. They divorced in 1970.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Fawn and her brothers, Spencer and Lynn, her parents and stepmother.

Colleen loved spending time with her family and her many friends. She was a lifelong learner. She was an avid reader, especially any history written by David McCullough. She belonged to book clubs and studied for book reports as though she were preparing to take the SATs.

She was truly crazy about her many Scottie dogs, most especially Lucy, who went to Dog Heaven last spring. She was a great cook, gardener and she especially loved begonias, dahlias and zinnias. Colleen will be missed by all, tall and small.

Evidently it has been almost a year since my dear cousin died! I had no idea, and so sorry. I got to wondering about her and searched. She was truly a remarkable person. Though 11 years older, she was always so sweet and kind to me. When my Aunt Elsie died she gave me her piano because it belonged to our Grandmother Hogan. I still have it and will always treasure it. One day I received in the mail a lovely portrait photograph of our Grandmother from Colleen. When I tried to call and thank her, I could never get through. She dearly loved her children and spoke highly of all of you all the time. Surely you were great comfort to her in the final years of her life. Bless you for filling the void in her life after the divorce.

Some may find it hard to believe but Brooke and my friends did not know our Mom's real name. Her nickname while we were in junior high and high school was Wanda the Witch....she of course was not a witch but the name stuck. Our dear friends, Robyn, Christine, Patty, Stella, Janice and many, many more all knew her as Wanda !!! My sister Brooke took the name a bit further and addressed all cards to Wanda June. Over the years we gave her witches as gifts, Brooke quilted a beautiful blanket with witches. As of today she is planning on getting a broom/witch tattoo so she can have the memory of our nickname and her forever. Suffice to say she was a really good sport with a great laugh and wonderful sense of humor. She is greatly missed but we are comforted that she is out of pain and hopefully with her beloved Scotty dogs !!!!

She was the very best Mom anyone could ever have. She was very bright, loved to read and learn. Had a great mind. She was extremely patient and loved her children unconditionally. She somehow raised a bunch of extremely independent children. Try as she might to persuade us from taking one path or another we always did what we wanted. The beautiful aspect is that she always loved us and supported our decisions, bruised hearts, skinned knees and worse. I wanted to let Marva Tobler know how much our mom loved her, like a sister. Marva stood by our Mom's side....ALWAYS....Bless you Marva for all the love and kindness you shared with our Mom.

Your mother was such a great lady. I loved all of her book reviews and visits to see her.

The world has lost such a talented person. My
thoughts go out to all of her children. She was my friend through the Friends Unlimited
group.

Such a beautiful eulogy. My mind has been flooded of my interactions with your mom, especially in my teenage years. Love and light to you, Tracey, and your brother and sisters. Melissa
