Craig Hansen Obituary

11/10/1950 ~ 9/7/2011
We lost Craig on Wednesday, September 7, 2011; he died peacefully at home. Craig was born on November 10, 1950, the son of Vaughn and Joy Hansen. Craig graduated from Granite High School, and received his Masters Degrees in clinical psychology at the University of Utah. He once said, "I chose psychology so that I can help people." Craig touched the lives of many young men throughout the years through his business Northwest Passage; he continued on this path, and worked despite his illness till the very end.
Craig's greatest joy was his children. He is survived by six children: Angelia Nicole Hansen Cummings (Cedar City); Andrew and Jason Hansen (Salt Lake City); and Kent, Barbra Jayne, and Summer Mikkelsen (Salt Lake City). He is also survived by his brother, Steve Hansen, his sister, Jill Scharrenberg, his stepdad, Everett McKinstry, his paternal aunt, Nellie Peterson, whom he adored as well as five grandchildren. He was reunited in death with his mom and dad as well as his best friend/brother, Scott.
Craig was a life member of Acacia Lodge #17 of the Free Masons; he was very proud to be a member of the El Kalah Temple of the Shrine. Craig married Darla the night of the Category 5 Hurricane Georges, September 26th, in New Orleans. That night set the tone for the marriage; it certainly was not boring! They enjoyed many trips to his favorite places: Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe, Boston, Hawaii, San Francisco, Seattle, Mississippi and Louisiana. Craig and Darla continued to be forever friends with a deep mutual respect for one another. Not a day passed by without the two talking, debating political issues, discussing parental issues, or just a "Hi, how are ya?" His biggest joy unquestionably was his daughter Angelia. She brought him immeasurable pride, and loved telling everyone all about her scholastic achievements from kindergarten to her recent years at Southern Utah University. He was very proud to see his baby girl marry at the beginning of August to "a fine young man," James. Craig enjoyed many golf trips most of which were to his second home, Las Vegas, Nevada: days on the green, and nights in the casinos! Every single game played by his beloved Yankees or Cleveland Browns was watched by Craig. He enjoyed life to the fullest, only slowing down in recent years, and will be missed by many friends.
Special thanks go out to Paul Bennett, who helped Craig navigate through everyday life in recent months, and to Brent Sharp for being a dear, true friend in times of need.
Memorial services in celebration n of Craig's life will be conducted by the officers and brothers of Acacia Lodge #17 on Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, Salt Lake City, UT, where friends may call for one hour prior to the services. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children of Salt Lake City. Please leave online condolences for the family at www.larkinmmortuary.com

I'm so sorry to hear of Craig's passing.
I am his cousin (Aunt Joy was my Mother,
Catherine's youngest sister). Craig was an intelligent, sweet, unique man. I'm sure that Aunt Joy was thrilled to have him with her again. I remember Craig when he was a cute little boy - so full of life. My thoughts and prayer are with his family.

Dear Darla, Steve and Jill,

I too am Craig's cousin. My mother is Mardelle and my two sister's are RoyLene and Cindy. As I read the memories of what RoyLene remembers and what Cindy remembers...the memories and wonderful joys we shared came flooding back to my mind and heart. I too have had a great loss this year and know how much it hurts to lose someone you love dearly. May the peace of Crist be with all of you during this most difficult time in your lives. May God Bless all of you!

Dear Darla, Steve, Jill and family, I am Craig's cousin Cindy Christensen Jackson. God bless your family during this time and always. May He give you peace and comforting memories. I remember when I was a kid one summer, Craig took me in his new convertible and raced down the highway going well over 100 mph. Scared me to death.... And driving around Salt Lake City late at night doing nothing in particular, but just enjoying the warm summer wind and good company. He was full of crazy adventure. As my sister RoyLene said, I also remember running around Nana and Grandpa's back yard during one of many, many family gatherings under the string of 100 w lights strung over the dinner tables lighting up the night. Craig and his brothers loved teasing us girls. What memories. My heart goes out to you. With much love, Cindy

Darla, Steve, and Jill,
I am a cousin as my mother, Mardelle, is Uncle Vaughn's sister. Jill, I don't know if you remember because you were so small, but we (Steve, Craig, Scott, Janis, Pat, Kim, and my sisters Pam & Cindy) would have the greatest times at Nana & Grandpa Hansen's house. We'd run through the yard, jumping the bushes out front until a grown-up would yell at us to knock it off! Then we had to come in and have ICE CREAM! Great memories. I miss all of you and send you my prayers and love.
