David Margetts Obituary

December 3, 1925 ~ June 2, 2017
David Rogers Margetts of Provo, Utah, was born on December 3, 1925, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Harold Austin Margetts and Agnes Rogers Margetts. He had one sister, Marie Rogers Delgado, who preceded him in death. David attended East High and the University of Utah, both in Salt Lake City.
In 1943 David joined the U. S. Naval Reserve. He served on-board the destroyer escort USS Wilhoit as an electronic technician's mate, first class. He saw both the Atlantic and Pacific, passing twice through the Panama Canal.
After the war, and released on points, David returned to Salt Lake and the University of Utah. There he majored in physics, graduating in 1946. He moved to Southern California to work in the aerospace industry at Helipot Corporation, Beckman Instruments, and Jet Propulsion Laboratory. At JPL he began as an engineer in the Instrumentation Section. This led to a position as Research Group Supervisor in special missile instrumentation. He participated in the first series of U.S. earth orbiting satellite instrumentation and the Ranger program.
David had begun lessons in violin when he was 12 years old and studied and continued to perform throughout his years in the aerospace industry. In 1965, he decided to pursue his true love--violin performance. While at JPL, he registered at California State College, Los Angeles, taking night classes for his Bachelor and Master of Arts in music. In 1970, he terminated with JPL and began studying for his doctorate at the University Southern California full time. During this time, he worked with several community orchestras and part-time at Chapman College in Orange County. He worked in films and television, primarily at Universal Studios and Paramount Studios. The Civic Light Opera enabled him to study for his doctoral exams at night. David graduated with a Doctor of Musical Arts in violin in the spring of 1979. A full-time offer to teach violin came in the summer of 1981, from California State University, at Fresno.
On August 10, 1981 David was sealed in the Salt Lake Temple to Christie Lee Slater (Clawson). They made their home in Fresno, California, where David was employed at the California State University, Fresno. Together, they raised Christie's three young sons from her previous marriage: Scott Andrew (Megan) and Kevin Slater, of Provo; Brian Slater (Lynton), of Cazenovia, New York.
David retired from CSU Fresno in 2001, but continued to teach privately in his home.
In 2006, David and Christie returned to Utah to be near family. From January 2009 until April 2012, David worked as an adjunct faculty member at the Utah Valley University. During his time at UVU he received recognition as the oldest faculty member at the university.
David was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He and Christie served for 20 years in three temples.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday, June 6, at the Heber City Cemetery, 680 N 550 E, Heber City at 11:00 a.m.
A memorial open house will be held Saturday, June 24, at the Margetts' residence, from 10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Mr. Margetts,
You touched my life beyond words. You were my teacher all through my High School years, and the concertos and Bach, as well as Flesch scales, and more etudes than I could count have stayed with my to this day. I learned so much about how to teach from you, and I find myself trying to figure some out, in much the same way you did. I love teaching, and you played a very large part in the manner in which you taught. I am so glad I reached out to you when I did. I just had to let you know the depth of how you taught. I told you at the time, however you are often in my thoughts, and VERY often in my teaching. I certainly never 'measured up' to your status. I hope and pray that during my time with you, you didn't find yourself disappointed. I was so lazy. When my mom took me to my lessons (before I could drive myself) she was able to have a delightful relationship with you as well. She admired and respected you, and she know I was in good hands having you as my teacher. Often one wishes you could have just one more conversation.... it does not occur to young people that there is no 'forever'... I could contact you 'later' but later didn't come until MUCH later. To anyone in your family, you blessed my life. You were the perfect teacher for me at the perfect time. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.

Dr. David Margetts was my violin teacher while I was a student at Chapman. I am ever so grateful for Dr. Margetts knowledge and energy while learning during my lessons. I really wish I could visit with Dr. MARGETTS once again and discuss outer space and music.

David Margetts - I think about you often, especially when I review pieces like the Mendelssohn violin concerto, the Bach solo sonatas and partitas, and the many F. Kreisler pieces that you so carefully marked with fingerings and bowings. Or, when I read your letters to me that I still have and the recordings you sent to me of your playing. You are always in my heart as a truly remarkable violinist and person. Love to you and your family. And thank you for all you did for me. xoxo Julieann Hazlehurst-Bowers June 1, 2020

I played quartets every Friday night with Dave Margetts and my violist father. My immersion in the quartet literature from my early teens paved the way for all good things in my musical life. I am now 71, active in Japan as a concert cellist, teacher, and recording artist; and remember with gratitude my many musical evenings with Dave Margetts, a remarkable presence in my early life.

Mr. Margetts gave me violin lessons at Chapman College in the 1970's. I was in the 4th grade. At the time I was considered a child prodigy, so they sent me to him. When I told my violin teacher at my regular school that my teacher at Chapman was David Margetts, she almost fell off her chair. "You got David Margetts??" I no longer play, but I truly appreciate that I got to learn from such a talented man.

Dr. David Margetts was my violin teacher at Chapman College for two years, from 1979-1981. Not only was David a fabulous violinist who thought out every phrase and nuance in his performances, but he was also a fabulous teacher. It was unfortunate for me that I only had two years with him before leaving for the East Coast to study at Peabody Conservatory.
However, we kept in touch, and I was privileged to receive some of his recordings. Lucky me! I have listened to them time and time and again confirming his artistry.
But, probably two of the most beautiful things about David Margetts, was his humbleness and kindness.
God bless you David Margetts, and I know you are playing with the angels. Condolences to Christie and family.

David Margetts and I played quartets every Friday night with my father, violist David Rosen, for many years. We even did the complete Haydn cycle of 83 quartets over the course of several of these years, one or two every week. Quartets with Dave Margetts formed the musical backbone of my life and I continue to enjoy my cello career.

I was a violin student of Dr Margetts in Fresno for 6 or 7 years during the late 80's and early 90's. He taught me so much and I owe my musicianship to him. I'm so sorry that I just found out he passed away just tonight. I wished I could have stayed better in touch. I have a lot of his maticulously marked music. They are a treasure to me. If a family member reads this, please mail me.

Between 2000 and 2003 I was fortunate to take violin lessons with Dr. David Margetts while living in Fresno. I will always be grateful for those lessons. Dr. Margetts accepted me as a violin student even though I was middle-aged and my last private violin lessons had been in college decades earlier. My violin lessons with Dr. Margetts were the best and most enjoyable I've ever had, and I really missed the lessons when my husband and I had to relocate to Northern California. I kept a lesson and practice diary, which I still have. A memory of those lessons made me look up Dr. Margetts online today; I am so sorry he has passed away.
