Elsie Doi Obituary

1922 ~ 2015
Salt Lake City, Utah-Elsie Matsuda Doi, age 92, passed away on March 1, 2015 at the Silverado Care Center surrounded by family, due to complications from a hip fracture. She was born on October 11, 1922, the fourth of seven children born to Kanji and Ei Matsuda. She graduated from Granite High School in 1940.
On August 21, 1945, Elsie left her family farm and married Misao Doi at the Salt Lake Buddhist Temple. Mom and dad, along with the in-laws, operated the West Side Hotel for over 30 years. She was a loyal Utah Jazz fan and enjoyed watching Tiger Woods on TV.
Elsie was known for her delicious potato salad (which no one else could make, even though she willingly shared the recipe), baked salmon, flank steak, chili, baked spare ribs and sour cream pound cake.
She was the epitome of hard work (and never complained), patience, graciousness, compassion and gave inner strength to everyone she encountered.
She was a member of the Salt Lake Buddhist Temple and Fujin-kai. Mom received the Sangha Award in 1966 and the Dana Award in 2010.
Elsie is survived by son Richard (Lynne), daughters Karen (Sam) Evans, and Charlene; three granddaughters Shelley (Chris) Taketa, Elizabeth (Andrew) Hayes and Jamie (Tuckett) Slade; three great grandchildren Jackie, Miya and Maxwell and future baby boy, Cory Richard; sister Taeko Yoshida, brothers, Richard and Karl Matsuda; brother-in-laws, Mitsugi Hino, Nobuo Aoki and many wonderful nieces and nephews, whom she loved dearly. Mom is preceded in death by sisters, Ruth Hino, May Matsuda and Eva Aoki, brother-in-law, Frank Yoshida, sister-in-laws, Fusa and May Matsuda.
A service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers or koden, contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.

I worked with Elsie at the U of U Purchasing Department. I loved her! She gave me her sour cream pound cake recipe. May you be comforted at this time at the loss of both your parents, but know that in death,as in life, they were not separated.

Dear Doi Family, We are sorry to hear of your parents' passing. We were neighbors at Ensign Downs. They were so delightful and sweet. We were lucky to get a loaf of that fabulous pound cake occasionally.

Mrs. Doi was a delight. She will be greatly missed. Eugenia and Brent Richins
