Fred Paulsen Obituary

Fred Paulsen

October 12, 1952 ~

November 05, 2025

Gardiner, Montana-Fred K. Paulsen, 73, of Gardiner, Montana, passed away unexpectedly on November 5, 2025, at Billings Clinic.

Fred was born on October 12, 1952, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Byron and LuRee (Kammerman) Paulsen. He began his career working in the family business, Paulsen Construction, where he developed a strong foundation in craftsmanship and construction.

In 1987, Fred accepted a seasonal position as a carpenter in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. His passion for the park grew, and he ultimately embarked on a 35-year career dedicated to preserving its historic structures. Over the years, he served as Manager of Historic Preservation and later as Project Manager, overseeing numerous conservation and remodeling projects and ensuring the park's architectural heritage was maintained.

Beyond his professional life, Fred was an avid gardener, often preserving the gardens bounty through canning. He was a skilled craftsman with a deep love for trains, and he cherished riding his Harley on warm summer days. A devoted New York Yankees fan, he also enjoyed relaxing and watching games with family and friends.

Fred is survived by his wife, Barbara (Altmeier) Paulsen; his children, Jamison C. Paulsen and Elizabeth I. Paulsen; and his grandchildren Layne, Jonah, Olivia, Arlo, Cedar, Jasper and Bjorn. He is also survived by his siblings: Craig Paulsen; Wynn (Paulsen) Young; Chad Paulsen; Stan Miller; Jenny Miller; and Phillip Miller.

He was preceded in death by his mother, LuRee (Kammerman) Paulsen; his father, Byron Paulsen; his stepmother, Mary Paulsen; and granddaughter Imogen.

He was known for his humor, his warmth, and his generosity-always ready with a joke or a story, and deeply committed to his loved ones.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Fred's memory to the Gardiner Ambulance Service or the Gardiner Food Pantry. A Celebration of Life will be held next summer, where friends and family will gather to share stories and celebrate a life well lived.
