George Lowe Obituary

Dr. George Henry Lowe, Jr. 1916 ~ 2004  Dr. Lowe died May 12, 2004 at home. He was born in St. Anthony, Idaho on May 13, 1916 to Alta Annetta Kerr Lowe and George Henry Lowe. The family moved to Ogden when he was 12, where a great teacher, Sarah McCracken ignited in him a great passion for learning which lasted his entire life. He became an Eagle Scout and was a counselor at Camp Kiesel with S. Dilworth Young. He later received the Silver Beaver award for his many contributions to scouting. Graduating from Ogden High School, he went on to receive bachelor and masters degrees in endocrinology from Northwestern University. After completing medical school, also at Northwestern, he completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at Presbyterian Hospital in Chicago. His surgical residency was at the Mayo Clinic, with which he maintained a close association throughout his life. He met his sweetheart Beth Felt following graduation from medical school, and she joined him for his residencies after marrying in the Salt Lake Temple on September 7, 1943. They moved to Ogden and started his surgical practice, being one of only three board certified surgeons at the time. He became Chief of Surgery at McKay Dee Hospital and was President of the Ogden Surgical Society. He served his community, state and nation as a Kiwanian, as Chairman of the Board of Blue Cross Blue Shield, and in 1966, as a volunteer for Project Viet Nam, treating civilian casualties North of Saigon. He loved experiencing other cultures, and taught his children to do so by inviting students and friends from other countries to share his home. He loved the outdoors, teaching his children and grandchildren river running, hiking, camping, skiing, swimming, and taking them to Boulder Cove in Wayne County and Argyle Creek in Duchesne County. He is predeceased by his son David and grandson Elroy, and survived by his wife Beth F. Lowe, sons George III (Liz), John (Nancy), Steve (Ruth), Bob (Chris), daughter Alta Davis (Rick), daughter-in-law Susan, and informally adopted sons Chou Mounarath and Haavard Nordlie. George and Beth have 31 grandchildren, 12 great- grandchildren, and four more on the way. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, May 15 at 1:00 p.m. in the Kingston Ward Chapel, 1425 Kingston Drive in Ogden. Friends are welcome to visit with the family one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the Huntsville cemetery.

Dr. Lowe taught me a great lesson: everyone has value. As a mere callow youth he welcomed me into his home, treated me with great respect and showed an interest in my opinions and activities. His attention gave me great value.
