After finishing pharmacy school (UCSF), a PGY-1 hospital pharmacy residency and a research fellowship, I interviewed for a faculty position in a basic science department at Utah. Hal was first on my itinerary. He tasked me to ask the toughest, most penetrating questions of everyone I would interview with and said he´d consider my visit a failure if, on my way home, I could not answer that either I was sure about wanting to come to Utah or it wasn´t for me. The visit was thrilling and everyone was candid. I most certainly wanted to come to Utah and in 1983 accepted an offer as an assistant professor. Hal provided the support, encouragement and an excellent environment which enabled me to secure extramural funding to support my nascent research. Hal was not just a superb administrator and colleague, he was one of the best `academic guidance counselors´ that a junior faculty member could have. After 12 productive years at Utah, I was recruited to Purdue. In 1995 with very mixed emotions. I left Utah for Indiana. I retired from Purdue in 2017. To Joan, my deepest condolences to you and your family. And thank you so much for all your kindness to me and your very warm hospitality. The annual parties you and Hal hosted at your home were the highlight every year.

I first met Dr. Wolf in the Autumn Quarter of 1961, when I was a student in his elective course in Toxicology at the College of Pharmacy, The Ohio State University. I am quite sure that he had just joined the faculty at OSU. He introduced my fifth year Pharmacy class to his infamous "cause - effect" test questions. We came to love him as a teacher and as a very warm hearted and witty man. I later used his cause - effect questions for 50 years on tests for my students (over 5,000) at the School of Pharmacy, University of Pittsburgh. I had the greatest of respect for his professionalism, leadership and warmth. Yes, a teacher is forever!! God bless you, Hal. Paul Schiff

I met Hal at the library when Joan and he would come in to get books. Hal's smile and friendly nature was always the highlight of my day! He was a wonderful man who will be missed by all that knew him. Thinking of you Joan, may you be surrounded by friends and family and wonderful memories of a life well lived!

Prof. Wolf was highly respected and spoke of often among the faculty and alumni gatherings at Ohio State. If the old guard were still alive they would be leaving their accolades here. So I will do that on their behalf.

Outstanding lecturer and mentor. A high mark in my many years at Ohio State University where I later became an adjunct clinical instructor and lecturer.

Dean Wolf was an amazing teacher and an incredible human being. As a student in the college of pharmacy, I always looked forward to his lectures. They were brilliant with a bit of humor thrown in. My father and his colleague, Dr. Robert Mason, had great respect for him as well. My deepest condolences to Joan and all the family.

Hal was great friend, mentor and colleague. With all his attributes what stands out to me was his great sense of humor and positive attitude. I know his family, though grieving, finds solace in the memory of all of the good times.
