Harvey Wright Obituary

In Loving Memory
Harvey Emmett Wright was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and humble, hardworking servant of the Lord. He passed away peacefully in his home in Tooele, Utah at the age of 86 after a 15 year battle with cancer. Harvey was born July 4, 1929 in American Fork, Utah to Emmett William Wright and Catherine Adeline "Addie" Hunter. He was the first born of three children. Harvey married his high school sweetheart Connie Mae Edwards on June 2, 1948. They were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on March 15, 1950. They are the parents of three children. Harvey is survived by his wife Connie and their 3 children and their spouses: John and Karma Wright of Stansbury Park, Utah, Terry and Dori Wright of Pine Canyon, Utah, and Cathy and Brian Jarvis of Orem, Utah. He is also survived by ten grandchildren (Austin Wright, Adam Wright, Lincoln Wright, Jasmine Wright, Erin Wells, Tori Hill, Hana Lucas-Wright, Jesi Thomas, Michael Jarvis, and Michelle Jarvis. Harvey and Connie have 16 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents Emmett and Adeline, his sister Beth Vowles, and his brother Richard Wright.
His career in construction lasted over 50 years. He began working for Jacobsen Construction in 1952 as a carpenter and advanced to a foreman, superintendent, project manager, and vice president of operations. His first project was building storage igloos on the Tooele Army Depot. He built several testing facilities at the Dugway Proving Grounds. He was involved in the building of the Dugway High School Gymnasium, the Dave Johnson Power Plant located east of Glen Rock, Wyoming, the LDS Church Underground Parking Garage, the Royal Hotel in Provo, the Holiday Telephone Building, the Temple View Theater, the various remodels of ZCMI, the University of Utah Special Events Center (Jon M. Huntsman Special Events Center), the Central Utah Jordan Water Treatment Plan, the Orem Utah Water Treatment Plant, the Salt Lake City International Airport concourses A & B, the Salt Lake City/County Building renovation and seismic retrofit, and the DMAD dam project on the Sevier River to name a few. Harvey completed a number of special projects for the LDS Church including the refacing of the granite on the exterior of the Salt Lake Temple and locating the lost corner stone and time capsule hidden in the foundation of that temple. The crowning jewel in Harvey's lifetime of building was directing the construction of the LDS Conference Center completed in April 2000.
His humor was highly developed and he taught many lessons with it. He was known as strong, creative master of his work. His children were the recipients of learning the skills of the construction trade as they assisted Harvey in the building of their own family homes and other family building projects.
He loved the Savior Jesus Christ and served in many Church callings and loved his family dearly. Among his other great loves were hunting and fishing, homemade strawberry ice cream, and BYU sports!
We are grateful to the Utah Cancer Specialists who cared for him especially oncologists Dr. Scott Samuelson and Dr. Bruce Bolonesi. We are also grateful to the many friends and family that have shown their kindness and offered their help during his illness.
A viewing will be held at Tate Mortuary (110 S Main St., Tooele, UT) on Friday February 5th from 6 pm - 8 pm and on Saturday February 6th from 11:30 am to 12:45 pm prior to funeral services. I was pleasantly surprised to see this pop-up in my email this morning. I think of Harvey often. While recently caught in a difficult situation with a challenging subcontractor on the project, I remembered Harvey. You knew when Harvey was upset by the color of his face, head down and marching to address the issue. It was handled promptly. I approached this the same way. I knew it had to be handled immediately. Even though I felt like yelling at the top of my lungs, I kept myself composed while hearing them out. Afterwards I explained to them the "Big Picture" and that I needed their help. You see, with Harvey You felt like you were part of the team. His team. He always ended the conversation on a positive note, with respect. Thus projects were built with the upmost Quality. People took pride of the work they did as a team member with Harvey as there leader. That's really what it is all about. Building Relationships. I think of him often. A great mentor and friend. I hope all is well with his dear family. I think of you often also.

Harvey. My next door neighbor. I only knew him for just a few years and was so sorry I didn't know him longer. He was so sweet, so funny, so considerate. I had no idea of all his accomplishments until after he died, all these huge building projects he was on. He built me a little garden gate, that's about all I knew about his building prowess. He never mentioned being on the city council or anything. He just didn't brag, even though he had plenty to brag about.
I really miss you, Harvey. There is a big gaping hole in the neighborhood that you used to fill.

Dear Wright Family:
My condolences to each of you in the passing of your Patriarch, Harvey Wright. I always appreciated working with him and cherished his fair and honest approach on his projects. I had the privilege of working with him on the LDS Conference Center as we installed the electrical work. He was a great mentor and will be missed.
Respectfully,

Richard W Young

In behalf of my father (Geo. Cannon Young) I must add to the tributes given Harvey. I served as project architect for my Dad's firm when the underground parking was built on the Church Administration block. Harvey's understanding of the task he supervised on that project included the construction of the giant pyramid footings for the future high rise structure. What a monumental task. Father greatly enjoyed his almost daily contact and discussions with Harvey. In addition, Harvey brought to our attention the destruction going on with existing columns under the Hotel Utah. Remedial work done under his supervision prevented a possible disaster with the Hotel. My hat is off to Harvey. May the Lord bless his family!

I had the opportunity to work with Harvey at the LDS Conference Center and many other projects. Harvey believed in hard work. He must have seen something in me, to advance me on my journey in the construction industry. The main thing that he passed on was the passion for building. I have many fond memories of Harvey. Walking with the 1st Presidency through the little Theatre at the Conference Center, Where we were when finding out about 9/11, and the Olympics to name a few. I know Harvey cared for me beyond work. He made me want to be the best at what I did. I am a better person because of the example that Harvey instilled in me. Harvey touched many people in his life and I personally will be carrying that work ethic throughout the rest of my life, while passing it on to others. Harvey's legacy will continue. I am so sorry for your loss. Connie, Terry, and John. Know that I sincerely love you and my heart also aches with hearing about his passing. Till we meet again. Clyde
