I knew Jim from working together at MCI for a few months and we kept in contact over the years. I lost contact about a year and a half ago and couldn't track him down. I now know why. It gave me great pain to hear the sad news about Jim. I don't know what happened, but I am heart broken. I honestly didn't know a man with a more sincere heart and concern for his fellow brother than Jim. He spoke of Maddy often and it was obvious she was the light of his life. He also spoke of Deb all the time and constantly expressed that she was "the one." He loved you both so much. I know he is in a better place, but I will miss his outrageous humor and his long talks. I love you man!

Madison-
I always felt lucky to grow up next door to your Daddy. The best memories I have of your dad is at the annual ward boating trip at Flaming Gorge. I was about your age and he was in High school but he made me feel like one-of-the-guys even though I was about 6 years younger, 3 feet shorter and 200 pounds lighter than him. To Jim, that didn't matter.
The thing I treasure most about your dad is that he always made me feel like I was important to him. That meant a lot as I looked up to him throughout my entire life. You are a lucky young lady to have Jim as your Dad!
Thanks for sharing your dad with me.
Love,
Mark Broadbent

Maddy:
Your Dad was a very kind person. He and his brothers would always involve me though I was several years younger. I have fond memories of him inviting me to hang out with him at Flaming Gorge.
One day someone stole my bike (I grew up next door to your Dad). I told your Dad and he helped us search until my bike was found. I will never forget that. He cared deeply for others.

Jim,
For the small amount of time I was able to know you, I will always remember what an influence you were to the people around you. Always looking for a way to bring people up in thier spirits, and making them feel noticed. It is rare to meet someone who touches so many different people and each in thier own way. To be so inspiring to so many people, not by doing something outstanding but by just simply being yourself. You are truly a person who will always be thought of highly, and missed greatly. It is rare to have known a person such as yourself.

Hey Jim,
I kept finding myself subconsiously looking for you in the crowd to get my big hug on Friday, like I always did when the gang was together. Thank you for so many memories and taking me in as a friend when I needed it. Thank you also for making such a great impression on Jake and Cole. They always wanted to know when they would get to see "Big Jim and Maddie" when we talked about catching frogs at the cabin or the "good ole days" as they put it. Know that I will always smile and laugh when I think about you. Our prayers go out to Maddie and your family. We Love You!

To Jim and his family,
I also miss the ole days running around the neighborhood playing every game possible. I still have many pictures and trophies that you and I and Tim and John won playing football and baseball together. I remember vividly you stopping in the middle of my street because you saw me cleaning up a fish I caught. I am sorry I never got to take you to my favorite spot. I am sure you will find it on your own now. My deepest sympathy to the entire Irvine family (insert big Jim hug here). He will be missed.
Sincerely,

One of the earliest memories I have of Jim was at Lake Powell. Colin had done something, and I watched from the top of one of the houseboats as Jim chased him in vain. With how big Jim was and with his back hurting him, it was memorizing as his huge girth waded into the water to grab Colin, who laughed and scattered.
When I heard he had passed away, I thought of Maddy. What's strange is that I never met Maddy, and I don't tend to remember things like that, but Jim was always talking about her and you got a sense of just how important she was to him. Despite anything else, one thing I'm sure of is how much he loved her.
Jim and I didn't talk a lot, but he was always friendly with me. He would always greet me with a huge grin and a bear hug when I hadn't seen him for a while. I worked with him for a while and he went out of his way to help me in the job.
The funny thing is, that despite his bluster, despite his "I don't care what anyone thinks", his huge heart made him such a softy.
I wish I had been a better friend, Jim. I'll try to do better.
My heart goes out to you and I hope you and your family find peace.

Big Jim, what a tragic loss. I will surely miss you barreling into our house with your big voice and your giant hugs that felt like you were squeezing the life out of me. I will miss your crazy stories that made me laugh til I cried. I will miss watching you with your giant body doing the "Puppet Master!" But, most of all, I will just miss you.
Thank you for being such a good friend to Branden, you were like the brother he never had.
You leave behind an amazing legacy in Maddy. She is such a sweet, smart, polite little girl...you have a lot to be proud of. Branden and I will always be there for her. We will take her to "U" games and teach her how to yell at the BYU fans in your honor!
I am heartbroken to see you go, our world is a quieter place without you and you will forever be missed.
Rest in peace big guy.

Jimmy; 25 years of laughs, fun, fear, and the pride of knowing you always "had my little sister's back". Much easier to write my thoughts than to attempt to articulate them to your family. I attended your viewing last night - it was as big as you, I'm sure the service will be same. You had so many friends! Sorry man, but I broke down hard when I got back to my car - lonely, deep, dark, then calm. And then I sucked it up, wiped my face clean, and took a huge breath; just as you'd have me do. So many friends there, some laughing, some crying, some in solice. You touched many lives. God bless you my friend, it hurts. Oh my God does it hurt. I love you bud. God speed to you, your family, and especially Maddy.

To Jim's family, especially Maddy:
What a wonderful man! I always loved seeing him, and treasure my memories of our Lake Powell trip, where we laughed and laughed on top of the boat. Jim's hugs are the best and I can still feel the last one.
Maddy - your daddy loved you with all his heart. His face would shine and he would grin whenever he talked about you, which was LOTS!
May God hold all of you and especially my friend Jim in his sheltering wings.
To Big Jim: You used to tease me: "Barb! Hold Me!" I will, bud, forever in my heart.

Big Jim, I was so sorry to hear you had left us so soon. I will always remember the talks we had at lunches when you were our collections salesman. You had such a tender spot in your heart, especially for that little girl of yours. You were always so unsure of your ability to nurture such a tiny little breakable blessing. It looks like you did far better than you could ever imagine. I am sure you left her with enough hugs and kisses to last her a lifetime. Until we all meet again, we'll miss you big guy.

Jimmy,
Your life was too short! Man, you were bigger than life. What a soul and what a heart. God puts people together for a reason I believe even for brief periods...I feel blessed and grateful to have known you. The times with you were some of the best and I will never forget your compassion, phone calls and love in the difficult times. Even though I moved away I missed you terribly and it hurts that I will never be able to hook up and ride together again on this earth.
Debbie, Maddy and family. I cannot imagine the pain of the loss of Jim for you. All who knew him could not help but love him dearly. My condolences to you tragic loss of one of the most powerful yet gentle souls I have ever know.

Debbie-
I just want to let you know how deeply I feel your pain right now. First loves always have a deep root in every heart and Jim's death has torn mine apart.
I have known Jim since Jr. High School and have seen him go through so many changes in his life. I was able to see the gentleness in Jim from a very early time. It is unfortunate for those people who did not get to meet the new Jim after he "cleaned up". He truly became the kind hearted and sincere person that I new underneath all of his layers. Jim had said that because of his big size, society had expected him to be threatening instead of the tender person he was. I know he struggled mentally with this for years. I was so glad that many of his classmates were able to see Jim in a different light at the High School Reunion. In Jim's last phase of his life he spoke of three things that he was so proud of. His relationship with Maddy, his ability to be "clean" and dedication to the program, and that he was dating a school teacher. The school teacher may seem a little odd to those who didn't know Jim well.
Deb, I just want you to know that in spite of his pain, I have never seen Jim happier than when he talked of being with you and Maddy. He was so positive that he was heading in the right direction to create the family setting that he longed for.
I want to thank you for making the last course of his life complete.

Jim-
I'm so sorry to hear of this tragedy. My prayers go out to your great parents Bill and Athleen, brothers and sister and beloved daughter. The times we shared running around our old neighborhood will always be remembered. You really turned some heads on some of those towering home runs you hit while playing for our Indians. I was happy to have you on my team to give me some "run support." I'm sorry we never made it out to the Provo to catch some wild trout, have a sandwich and share some stories of the old days. Keep your eyes out for a nice deep hole, where the browns are holding, and when we meet again you and I can make those casts.
Love, Tim R. Hale

Dear Maddy: Your father was a great man. He taught me it was OK to give a man a big hug and say I love you, which he did when ever I saw him. He said to me, "I'll be there if you need me" and he was. I miss him so much but I am thankful I will always have his memory and the times we shared. Good luck to you Maddy. Be strong and make your daddy proud.

Jim,
His kindness was grand. My thanks for the rides. Love for Madi showed me my own love for my daughter. God bless your family, you will be missed.

Hey JimBob....
It's just like you to go and shock everyone, you've always enjoyed being the center of attention and the center of entertainment. Our life together, long ago, was some of the best and some of the worst but YOU gave me the love of my life, our Madison, aka "Peazer". May you rest in peace or just take a nap because it is your job to keep an eye on our girl and haunt all of the boys who chase after her. I'll always have a place in my heart for you and promise to take the best care of your baby.

Your life was cut way too short. May you rest in peace and enjoy your reunion with Angus!!!

Jim was a good man. I hadn't seen him for several years, and I am greatly saddened by news of his passing. I knew him at Olympus High. His huge presence, and sense of humor enlivened many gatherings.
Years later, I had the honor to work with him at a collection agency that he helped build, from the ground-up. He was the consumate salesman. He dressed sharply, and was the epitome of style. He certainly used his huge personality and genuine friendliness to his professional advantage. His example truly benefited my fledgling sales career. I mentioned him in my office today. I was pleased (and not suprised) that several seemingly random people in different departments knew Jim, as a salesman, quite well.
I had the pleasure to flyfish with Jim a couple of times on the Provo river. He was an accomplished angler. I have wondered about Jim often as I thumb thru my fishing photos;
Chilly November morn.
Freezing mist, flowing water.
First light.
Leaves explode, pure color.
Kneeling, there, water's edge.
Proudly holding the giant brown.
Jim sports that spectacular smile.

In junior high school our spanish class went to Mexico and I'll always remember how Jim watched out for us on the streets of Mexico City. He was a gentle giant then, and as I learned this summer at our 20 year high school reunion, he became even gentler and more lovable through the gift of his daughter.

I will absolutely miss our pillow talk, your loving notes and messages, our Harley rides, and your huge arms that always made me feel safe and completely loved and everything else. I am grateful you are at peace and out of pain my dearest, bravest soldier. As always, I am so proud of you! I will love you forever.

I'm very sorry for your loss. My brief association with Jim occured with a shared interest in weightlifting during the 1980's. My prayers go out to his family.

I remember having a blast up in Alaska with Big Jim this year I dont ever remember laughing so hard as when he came down to the river in disguise no shirt just waders and a paper plate over his face with a 10 inch cuban cigar hanging out of the hole he burned in the plate for his mouth. Several times I was laughing so hard I was crying I didnt know Jim very long but as full of personality as he was he made a big impact. I will miss fishing with and lunch with Big Jim.

Jim was special! I loved him! He wasn't perfect but he was closer to living a Christ-like life than most people I know. He was the definition of a man!
