Jean Paul Fugal died peacefully on March 2, 2017, surrounded by his loving family, singing him home. He left behind the love of his life, Louanne, to whom he had been married for the best 16 years of his life.
Jean Paul was born October 2,1940, in Milford, Utah, to Jean and Maxine Fugal. He attended high school in Pleasant Grove, and attended Utah State University before enlisting in the United States Air Force. He served tours in Germany and Taiwan, where he worked in missile control. Following his discharge, he worked at Hill Air Force Base in production control, while simultaneously earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Weber State University. After working in the trucking industry for many years both as a long-haul driver and dispatcher, he worked as a Recreational Therapist at the Utah State Developmental Center.
Following retirement, he was able to fully pursue his passion for bluegrass, old time, and old country music where he created a musical family of friends that he and his soulmate, Louanne, cherished beyond words. In addition to his love of singing, playing, and collecting music, Jean was a voracious reader. He enjoyed a good debate on a wide variety of topics and loved to spark a conversation. He loved classic cars, trucks, and motorcycles and could tell you the make, model, and year of any of them with just a quick glance. Just as his father was, he was practical and handy, and could fix anything. If a part could not be found, he would invent something that would work. Jean loved to cook for folks and had many of his own cast iron black pot specialties that henceforth became everyone's favorite. He was humble and generous and would either figuratively or literally "give you the shirt off his back".
Jean Paul was preceded in death by his son, Ricky, and his parents, Jean and Maxine Fugal. He is survived by his wife, Louanne; siblings: Karen (Glenn) Peterson, Jerald Mac (Pat) Fugal, Colleen (Jim) Starr, and Anne (Ray) Pollmann; children: Tanya (Corey) Dawson, Shelly (Rob) Weber, Chad (Marie) Clevenger, Nicole (Leo) Andresen, Ryan (Yue) Hayes, and Melissa (Zak) Dablow; 15 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren (plus 1 more on the way), his extended family, and all of his many treasured friends.
Jean was the happiest when he was singing and he delivered his songs straight and deep into your very soul. He could often be heard singing these lyrics from a favorite "Stanley Brothers" song: "Oft I sing for my friends, when death's cold hand I see. When I reach my journey's end, who will sing one song for me? I wonder (I wonder) who will sing (will sing) for me; when I'm called to cross that silent sea, who will sing for me?" The answer to that our precious Jean Paul is also your legacy: All of your family and friends who so dearly loved you and will hold you close in their hearts forever.
Celebrations of his life will be held in Scio, Oregon, and Utah, with dates and times to be determined.
