Jeanne Hunter Obituary

Jeanne Cecile Hunter died in her sleep early the morning of December 19, 2016, at the age of 92. Jeanne was born January 30, 1924 in Welland, Ontario Canada; the daughter of Mabel Winnifred (Hodges) and John Cecil Hunter. Although Jeanne resided in the United States for over 60 years, she was fiercely Canadian. Maple leaves adorned everything from her license plate cover to jewelry to the flag she proudly flew for both American and Canadian holidays. A young widow, Jeanne moved her infant daughter and mother to Utah in 1953 to join the LDS church and it's world famous choir. Her booming soprano was part of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir for 15 years. She was also invited to be a featured soloist at several other churches and events. Jeanne worked for many years as an accountant at Mountain Fuel (Questar). She was extremely proud of the fact that, as a single woman, she was able to purchase a home for herself and her small family. She also took pride in the beautiful plants she meticulously tended in her yard; her vibrant orange poppies being a favorite. Although suffering from MS, Jeanne had a talent for most everything she tried her hand at. She sewed Halloween costumes for her grandchildren, studied calligraphy, painted, knitted, embroidered, wrote poetry, and of course, sang. In addition to her love of flowers; Jeanne enjoyed antiques, coin collecting, cats, chocolate milk, and genealogy. A few years ago, she was excited to present a published book about the Hodges family she had collaborated with a cousin on to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. Jeanne loved the gospel. She served in a variety of church positions, including volunteering on the prayer roll at the temple. Jeanne was exceptionally clever and had a quick wit; most everyone who met her would comment on a what funny lady she was. She was also profoundly independent. She only gave up driving in recent years at the strong urging of her family; and resided alone at the home she was so proud of until May of this year. Jeanne was generous, hardworking, and deeply loved her family. She will be so very missed. Jeanne is preceded in death by her dear mother, her sister June, and her Auntie Pearl. She is survived by her daughter Sheila (Gary) Hoag, 6 grandchildren, 12 ½ great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
