Joseph Zvonek Obituary

Joseph Frank Zvonek "Joe" Beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Joe Zvonek, age 70, died March 9, 2006 peacefully at his home with his family by his side. Joe has gone to heaven to be with God and his family. Joe was brought into this world March 8, 1936 to Frank and Katie Zvonek. Joe moved to Salt Lake City in 1957 where he met Barbara Cuglietta. They wed at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in 1958. Joe and Barbara have four children: Tony; Kathy; Dan (Tina) and Gina Stavros (Bill). Besides his wife and children, Joe also leaves behind two grandchildren, Dustin Zvonek (Stephanie) and Desirae Robinson, three sisters, Mary Zvonek, Rose Reed (Tom), and Camille Pagnini (Jim) and numerous nieces, nephews and countless friends. Joe was preceded in death by his brother Frankie Zvonek (Betty) in 1987. Joe was always known as an active member of his community who loved to help others. Joe served St. Patrick's Parish as a lector and Eucharist Minister. Joe also volunteered in numerous fundraising events including St. Patrick's weekly bingo, and annual carnival as well as the yearly Catholic Diocesan Development Drive. Joe has been a member of the Rose Park Lions Club since 1989. He regularly volunteered for Rose Park Elementary School, and St. Josephs Villa, and served as a community watchman. The protection of the sanctity of life was an issue Joe believed in and in his later years served as a volunteer for the Northern Utah chapter of Birth Right. Joe was also known as a man with an amazing work ethic. In his 28 years working for the Utah State Tax Commission, Joe was recognized on several occasions for his outstanding public service. In 1987 he was a finalist for the outstanding public employee of the year. Joe worked for over 30 years as an independent tax consultant and bookkeeper from his home. It was this work that Joe truly enjoyed as it gave him an opportunity to help others and socialize with friends and family. In the 1960's he helped found the Catholic Community Credit Union and served as president and later as treasurer for over 25 years. Joe was a wonderful father to his children and grandchildren, serving as a positive role model by being a man of the highest moral integrity and character. In a world with so few heroes we are forever grateful that we found ours. While we all will miss his presence and the sound of his voice we will never forget the words and actions that served as lessons to all. Barbara and the Zvonek family would like it to be known that the services provided over the years by Dr. Anna Beck, and more recently by Community Nursing Services hospice nurses, will never be forgotten. Thanks to all the friends and family for their cards, letters, food, phone calls, thoughts, Masses, prayers, and words of encouragement. A special thanks to Chuck and Judy Wimmer, as well as Bob and Aki Sugino for their extraordinary support and comfort. A funeral mass will be celebrated Monday, March 13 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 1040 West 400 South. A vigil service will be held Sunday, March 12 at 7:00 p.m. also at the church, where friends may call from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. Committal, Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery, 4th Avenue and T Street. Funeral directors, Neil O'Donnell and Sons. In lieu of flowers, Barbara has requested that donations please be sent to the Utah Cancer Specialists Foundation, 1121 East 3900 South, Suite C230, SLC, UT 84124. Our beloved Joe will be dearly missed. May God bless and comfort him in eternal peace.

Thanks to all that entered such wonderful words regarding my dad. We all adored dad but I did not fully realize how many people he helped over the years and how many lives he affected in such a positive way. It has been overwhelming to say the least. Again, thanks to all for your kindness and support during this difficult time.

Dear Barbara, Kathy and Family, I am saddened to hear of Joes passing. He was a truly inspirational individual to all men that he came in contact with. I am sure that he will be missed many. I am comforted in the knowledge that has moved on to a more peaceful place, and that he will always reside in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. Best wishes from all of us. God bless

Joe was my first supervisor when I started with the Tax Commission nearly thirty-five years ago. I remembered Joe in my retirement speach as the one who taught me to "just do it right." He was the most fair-minded and friendly individual I think I have ever met. I'll always remember bowling with Joe and the kids in the parent-youth

leagues at Fairmont. Truly one of the "good guys"--may he rest in peace, and I hope the family will take comfort in knowing how much Joe influenced so many people with whom he worked and associated.

Dear Barbara and Family,

This world has lost a wonderful and gentle man. I know Joe from our days at the Tax Commission where he was a friend to everyone there. I often relied on his extensive knowledge and knew that "Gentle Joe" would always answer my questions. Joe treated everyone, friends, co-workers, and taxpayer's with respect and greeted all with a big smile and bright eyes. After he retired it was always fun to run into Joe and Barbara sharing a pizza at lunch. The pizza was most likely cold by the time they got to it as Joe was so busy visiting and saying hello to friends, Barbara always by his side. Barbara, may the wonderful memories you and your family have of Joe make you smile each time you think of him.

Dear Barbara and family,

I was saddened to learn of Joe's passing. May you and your family be comforted by knowing that Joe touched so many in a positive way.

Back in 1986, I interviewed for a tax auditor position with the Tax Commission. I was a single parent, on welfare and food stamps, just graduating from college. I really needed the job. When I was asked a prejudical question by one of the other interviewers, Joe came to my rescue. Through his questioning, I was able to respond correctly and was offered the position. I will forever remember that simple act of kindness.
