Laura Dell Torgeson Maughan died peacefully August 25, 2002, in her home with her family at her side. Her mind and spirit remained strong and clear. Born April 28, 1919, in Logan, Utah, to George A. and Laura Nebeker Torgeson, granddaughter of pioneers who crossed the plains and settled at Bear Lake and in Logan. In childhood she tended her family garden on the banks of the Logan River. Throughout life she cultivated a character of love, intelligence, and grace. She was kind. She was gentle. She had a beautiful smile with light in her eyes. Calm elegance. She was easy to be with. After World War II, she married the love of her life, Richard Johnson Maughan, in the Logan LDS Temple. They were devoted companions. They enjoyed supporting each other in their life's work. They were wonderful parents. Their legacy will guide their children for life. Her family was the focus of her life. She served delicious meals. Her family ate breakfast and dinner together every day. Her children fondly remember coming home to the smell of her homemade bread in the oven, with opera on the radio. Her children and grandchildren treasured weekly Sunday dinners in her home. She loved being with her grandchildren, Melanie, Kristina, Chelsea, Emily, and Joshua. Their sweet spirits filled her with joy. She attended the A.C. (USU) where she valued learning, especially her English and nutrition classes. She enjoyed music, the arts, cooking, gardening, sewing, reading, playing bridge, breakfasts in the canyon, and traveling. She cherished lifelong friendships - her bridge club friends, Alpha Chi Omega sisters, neighbors, and many others. She was a member of the LDS Church and liked serving with others in various capacities. She is preceded in death by her husband, Richard J. Maughan, former Chief Justice of the Utah State Supreme Court; sister, Eloise Lohman; brother, George Torgeson. She is survived by her children, Margith, Joyce, Eloise (James Willis), Richard (Becky), Mary (John Tay); and her precious grandchildren. Laura Dell and her family give heartfelt thanks to their extended Torgeson and Maughan families for their love and support. Many thanks to her wonderful in-home caregivers and to the LDS Hospital team for their care and expertise. Funeral, 11 a.m. Thurs. Aug. 29, Bountiful 37th Ward, 1500 N. 400 E. Bountiful. Family and friends may call on Wed. Aug. 28, 6 - 8 p.m., Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 N. Main, Bountiful; and Thurs. 10 - 10:45 a.m. at the church. She will be buried in the family plot at Logan Cemetery. Dear Richard and Family:
I was so sorry to hear about the death of your sweet mother. If Dave were here, he would be extending these sympathies to you, but since he is not he would want you to know that we are sorry for you loss. The last time I talked to your mother she was so concerned about my welfare and yet so sick herself. I know you will miss her.
My love to you all,
Karen & (David) Moss

Dear Aunt Laurie...You were truly a Renaissance woman. You raised a beautiful family, and you will be missed by all. A part of my history goes with you. 'Til we meet again. Love, Joane
