Letha Fox Obituary

Letha Monson Fox 1907 ~ 2006 Our beloved mother, Letha Monson Fox, in her 100th year, passed from our arms to those of her beloved husband, Soren Neve Fox, who she had missed for over 13 years, on the evening of December 24, 2006. She was surrounded by her three sons, LaMar Monson Fox, (Betty), David Monson Fox (Judy), and Jesse Neve Fox (Ginny). As Paul said, "She had fought the good fight." She is now dancing with Dad at last, just as she did long ago on their first date at Lagoon, and the music now will never stop. Letha was born on June 25, 1907, the oldest child of Frederick and Margaret Monson in Mapleton, Idaho. She grew up on the flats of Downey, Idaho, where two sisters and six brothers joined the family. Her parents and her eight siblings have preceded her in death. She graduated from the LDS Hospital School of Nursing in 1929. She loved being a nurse, and blessed the lives of countless patients, friends, and especially her family with her gentle hands of healing. She practiced nursing at the LDS Hospital for many years, where she touched the lives of many. In her 50's she began a second, 20-year career as an industrial nurse at the Eitel-McCollough plant. Again she made lasting friends there, as she did wherever her gentle spirit could comfort the sick and injured. She married Soren Neve Fox in the Salt Lake Temple on January 1, 1933, which was unique since the temple was opened specially for them on that Sunday. But her greatest act of loving nursing was saved for her beloved Neve during his declining years. She nurtured him, prodded him, and kept him as active as he could be until she could do no more. She is survived by her three sons and their wives, 15 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She is loved by all as a wonderful matriarch and example of how to live life. Her warm smile and gratitude made visiting her a special delight to them all. All of her grandchildren can remember playing as little ones with the plastic horses in her kitchen, and felt the love she had for each of them individually. It is to her three sons that she gave unlimited, eternal devotion. Among many things, we all remember sharing the joy of University of Utah victories; and the agony of their defeats with Mom, who was so dedicated to the school she had never attended that our Dad finally gave her a personalized license plate, "MRS UTE". As she drove by the bus stops near the U, students would cheer and pump their fists in delight as they saw this 70-year-old lady who was one with them. "MRS UTE' has now gone home. Funeral services will be Thursday, December 28, 2006 at 12 noon, in Bonneville First Ward, 1535 E. Bonneview Drive (1050 S.). There will be a viewing at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 E. 1300 South from 6-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 27, 2006 and from 10:30 to 11:35 a.m. on the day of the service. A special thank you to the staff of The Wentworth and the IHC Hospices, who cared so lovingly four our mother for over six years.

When I married into the Monson family, Aunt Letha welcomed me with open arms. Through the years we often visited her while living in Denver, the last visit just last August. She was a joy to know, and will be missed.

Aunt Letha was the best and as my Dad Gene would say, "The prettiest darn nurse there ever was." I remember well the kindness Letha and Neve showed me as a young girl and as a teenager. I even took my friends over to visit them when I was in High School. I will miss visiting Aunt Letha because she was the last of a valiant generation but I know she is in a good place with her beloved souse Neve, her parents and the other 8 Monson siblings. Love you Letha. Vonnie Monson Schenk
