Elsie and family, I am so sorry for your loss. Mary, JoAnn and I had such a great time all through school. Her kindness and great outlook on life were contagious. Together we were going to take on the world and it appears that she did. I was honored to be her friend.

I first met Mary when she was a student at South High in one of my English classes. I was either a first or second-year teacher at that time. It was a great pleasure to welcome her back to South as a colleague, and we remained colleagues through our time at Highland together. I was so impressed by her strength the last few years as she continued to come to water fitness classes and maintain a very positive and hopeful attitude about life and just living it. What a wonderful person. She will be missed greatly, and I send my most heartfelt sympathy to her family and especially to her son who gave her such joy and pride.

Dear Marty and Bobby,
I hope these words will comfort you at this time. Mary was a colleague of mine at Highland High School. She was a very brave individual, friend and parent. She always spoke so highly of Bobby and so proud of him. Mary and I shared the same prep period and had many conversations. We helped each other through our teaching career. Mary was the glue that would get Jill, Mauri, Cathy and I together for various events she would plan. At one dinner party, around Christmas, Mary brought each of us a snowman favor that I set out every Christmas. In the Christmases to come that snowman will always remind me of Mary. Mary always called me "friend." After retiring from teaching, Mary came to my water aerobic classes at the Sports Mall and fought valiantly to stay healthy. I will miss her at the water fitness classes.

Ms. Evans was one of my favorite teachers from high school! I thought she was so beautiful, independent, and smart. She actually inspired me to get my B.A. degree in psychology. So sorry she had to die so young. She touched many lives, including mine.

Mary and I shared many glorious times in our twenties and thirties; drives in her Celica, wine and cheese parties at her apartment or home, thumps on my head when Mary suddenly told me she was leaving NOW, and many shared moments of sincere conversations. Her family, Elsie, Marty, and brilliant young son, Bobby, were her universe. She was a very lucky woman, and I was very fortunate to have her in my life during those wonderful years. Love you, Mar.

I spent many days in Dora the Dart (Mary's first car) with Mary at Liberty Park listening to Kool and the Gang. Fond memories. Thoughts are with her family at this time.

Mary was a great teacher and very kind person. I had her for drama while at South and she was very good at putting up with my friends and I and our antics in theatre. When my close friend David Candelaria passed away shortly after graduating from South, she showed up at his funeral and made everyone feel much better with her concern and kind words. I was glad to hear later that Mary had married my cousin Marty. My prayers go out to her family that they will be comforted during this time of great loss.
God Bless!

But now she is out of pain and in a far better place, up yonder, where we will all meet up again, one day. You are all in my prayers...may God bless and watch over all of you in this time of loss...J.V.
