Michael L McDonald

1943-2021

West Valley City, Utah—Michael L. McDonald, 78, passed away on June 25, 2021 after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. Born in Salt Lake City on January 23, 1943 to parents Stanley Keith McDonald and Margaret Lindsay McDonald and he was one of 6 children. Preceded in death by both of his parents and his sister, Jean Breeze.

Mike attended Granger High School and this is where he met his sweetheart Sandra Ann Brown. Mike and Sandy were married on July 20, 1963. Their union produced 4 children. Shawn (Tina) McDonald, Mindi (Rob) Powell, Jody McDonald, Steven (Raquel) McDonald, 10 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren.

Mike was a proud member of Ironworker's Local 27 for 55 years. He served an apprenticeship from 1966 to 1969 after which he was employed as a Journeyman Ironworker. In 1984 he was elected to be the President of Ironworkers Local 27 and he held this position until October of 2000. In 1985 Mike became the Apprenticeship and Journeyman Training Director for Local 27. Also, in October of 2000 he became the Business Manager of Local 27 and he remained in that role until his retirement in December of 2018. Mike represented his profession and Local 27 at every opportunity whether he was at home or abroad. He very much appreciated the relationships that developed and the friends he made.

Mike had many accomplishments and received much recognition over the course of his life and career, but he was most proud to be called Husband, Dad, and Grandpa.

I knew Mike for many years, always had great respect for him. Mike helped me in many ways to be a better Ironworker. It was with regret that I herd of his passing. He will be missed. Also knew his daughter Mindy, she, also, is a wonderful woman who ran the apprenticeship with a true and fair hand. Farewell my friend!

I first met Mike at the Ironworkers Instructor school at San Diego in 1993. Over the years, I was around him at the school, District Council meetings, Intermountain Trust fund meetings and Ironworker Convention. In all cases with Mike, what you saw was what you got. As Trust Fund chairman, he was an invaluable asset in our local pension plan's merge into the Intermountain. He was a good person and I will certainly miss him.
