Mildred Metcalf Obituary

Mildred Fox Metcalf Will Be Missed Mildred died peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, March 25, 2008. She was born and raised in Richmond, Indiana, to become a very bright and pretty young woman, graduating from Earlham College with a triple major in English, Latin, and Music. She taught all three to high school students for three years, then married her college cheerleader sweetheart, John. They traveled the rural southwest together in the late 1930's as he surveyed the soils for the Soil Conservation Service. Two boys came along just as John went off to World War II. Mildred raised the kids for two years in Indianapolis 'til John came home, then the family moved to Utah, where they stayed 'til the boys grew up and went off to college and the military. Mom played and taught piano all her life, learned to play the organ, and came to Salt Lake where she was the organist at Wasatch Presbyterian Church for 27 years 'til after John's death in 1984. Never outgoing, and uncomfortable in large groups, she was nevertheless a bright and congenial conversationalist one-on-one, and continued reading and staying up-to-date long after her arthritis quieted her piano. She kept the large print publishers in business literally 'til the day she died. If we asked her a question as youngsters, she and dad would always say, "Look it up, so you'll remember it." She leaves a legacy of honesty, integrity, and memories of bright eyes and a smile, always happy to see us on our visits, her mind still bright even as her body aged away. We thank Dr. Mary Jane Norman and the staff at Garden Terrace Nursing Facility for their gentle and caring way with a special lady for whom they cared a great deal. Preceded in death by her husband, John, and son, Donald, she is survived by son, Tom, grandkids, Ian, Tim, Sarah, Tom, John, and Erin, and great-grandchildren Ryan and Mason. Memorial service will be at Wasatch Presbyterian Church on Sat., March 29, at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Utah Humane Society.

Dear Tom,
I hope you will remember me and accept my condolences on the passing of your dear Mom. My sister informed me of her death and directed me to this page. What a wonderfully wise and gracious woman she must have been. I'm sorry I never got to meet her. I do hope that your grief will be far outweighed by your appreciation for her long and admirable life. How proud she must have been of you and your family.
An old friend,
Jerilee

Dear Tom and Family,
My deepest sympathy at the passing of your mom. Although I did not know her personally, I am positive that she was a wonderful person. This I know because I know you and how wonderful you are. She raised you well which is a direct reflection on her. May peace and comfort be yours as you remember her life of service as your mom and grandmother.
Sincerely,

Janine Bernard

Deepest sympathy on the loss of your mother and grandmother. We have so many fond memories of her from when we lived across the street from her for 13 years. We spent many days sitting on the steps and talking to her as she sat outside with Princess. She was such a wonderful woman. She subscribed to Highlights magazine for Tiana (my eldest daughter). When Kylie (my youngest) came along, she changed the subscription to both their names. Who else would think to do that! After we moved to Colorado, she would send me letters that I have kept because they were so special. She is someone we will always remember.

Friends and neighbors on Garfield Ave.

March 28, 2008

We send our sympathy and best wishes to the Metcalf family. Mildred was a wonderful neighbor, as proven by always keeping her cat on a lease. (If only we would have been as thoughtful neighbors) We are grateful, that the Metcalf legacy will continue on Garfield Ave. with her granddaughter and family on our street.
