Morris Johnson Obituary

1925 ~ 2015
Morris Earl Johnson was born March 23, 1925 to Edwin Earl and Pauline Morris Johnson. Morris passed away peacefully while surrounded by his family on December 12, 2015.
He married Elaine Rawlings in the Salt Lake Temple on June 25, 1948. Morris graduated from Utah State University and attended M.I.T in Boston where he earned a master's degree in City Planning.
Morris served his country in World War II as an officer in the Army Air Corps. After receiving his commission and wings he served as a flight instructor.
Morris was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints. He loved the Lord and served in various capacities in the church. As a missionary he served with his wife, Elaine, in Hawaii, Minnesota, and in the Salt Lake Inner City Mission.
Everything Morris did had a touch of excellence. In his professional life he made contributions in revitalizing downtown Salt Lake City. As a professor at the University of Utah, he had the respect of all he taught and trained. Morris had a gift of artistic expression, and he enjoyed making jewelry for family and friends. He was a compassionate and loving father who always had a listening ear.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine, and children: Kent (Celeste) Johnson, Kathy (Jeff) Karren, Teri (Brad) Jensen, Todd Johnson, and William (Andrea) Johnson, as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Morris is preceded in death by a granddaughter, Melanie.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Friday December 18, 2015 at the Valley View 4th Ward, 2125 East Evergreen Ave. (3435 South). Friends may visit with the family on Thursday evening from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at the Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 South 2300 East, and at the church on Friday morning from 9:30am to 10:30am at the church. Interment: Salt Lake City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to the Primary Children's Medical Center. I was fortunate enough to have been one of Morris' students in City Planning at the U. He was a great mentor to me during my school years as well as during my professional career. He always had a kind word or constructive direction to all those who sought out his help. He will be missed by may. RIP Morris.

Morris made my wife's ring for her. He took the time to sit with me, take my input, and add his meticulous and artistic touch. He donated hours of work, and claimed it was "therapeutic" for him. I reluctantly accepted his charity, but told him to forget it when he offered to pay for the gold.

I gave Morris a check for the gold, and he wouldn't cash it. I begged him to do it, and I said that my bride and family would never let him pay for the gold. In a humble, yet stern voice, Morris demanded that I take his charitable gift and not to tell anyone.

I promised not to say anything, but now that he has gone on to a better place, I feel it appropriate to share this story.

Morris did his alms for no one to see, just as the Savior taught. Morris = integrity! Enough said. I love Morris and the Johnsons!

I got to know Morris while I spent some time with Kline Strong (Hutchison's Grandpa) in Kline's later years. Kline would have me take him in the car to go see Morris, and we'd spend time talking together in Morris' greenhouse out back. It was fun for me to see a couple of long-time friends hang out with each other. Morris was always kind to me and was a great friend to Kline. I hope I can be that cool when I'm old.

Elaine, Jamie & Mike, and Jessica/Lacy, I'm sorry for your loss. I enjoyed getting to know Morris. You are in my prayers.

Fond memories of Morris and his wonderful family. His dad was our Bishop and served the East Millcreek area with great love and compassion. Morris inherited his great qualities as a member of this great family. He served well in his duty to God and Country.

Our love to his family.
