Dr. Philip Caligiuri passed away peacefully on September 4, 2023, where he had been living in Salt Lake City since 2008 with his wife Nancy. Phil was born in Chicago, Illinois, left high school after his sophomore year to attend Roosevelt University in Chicago and graduated with a B.S. with Honors in Chemistry. He went on to graduate with an M.D. with Honors from the University of Illinois College of Medicine. He was a board-certified radiologist.

Dr. Caligiuri was a chest radiologist and Professor at the University of Utah. He went on to work at the Salt Lake City VA Health Care System. Prior to this, Dr. Caligiuri was on the faculty at the University of Chicago, and served on staff at Mercy Medical Center in Chicago. Throughout his career, he had a passion for teaching and was always willing and eager to share his knowledge. Dr. Caligiuri received numerous teaching awards throughout his career.

He was frequently acknowledged by medical students, residents, and colleagues for his overall excellence as a teacher. In recognition by colleagues of his outstanding contributions as an attending physician and a beloved faculty member, in 2023 the Philip Caligiuri Salt Lake City VA Teacher of the Year Award was established in his honor to be awarded annually.

Phil was known for being a loving and devoted husband, good-natured, and supportive of his family, friends, and colleagues. He was highly curious, an avid reader and a lifelong learner. He had a good sense of humor. He loved to hike in the Salt Lake City area mountains and explore national parks with Nancy. Phil was an explorer and adventurer in knowledge and physical activity. He ran marathons, completed a triathlon, rock climbed, hiked to the summit of Mount Rainier, studied astronomy, mathematics and theoretical physics, and had many other interests. He completed the Great Books Course at the University of Chicago and enjoyed being a member of his Monday Book Club. His interests were eclectic. Phil was very spiritual.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents, the late Attilio and Alba Caligiuri. He is survived by: Nancy, his loving and devoted wife of 39 years; his brothers Arthur Caligiuri (Maggie) and Robert Caligiuri; his in-laws Marilyn Wedenoja, Linda Wedenoja, Edwin Wedenoja, Kay Taylor (John Sullivan), and Paul Alexander; and his niece Emma Taylor-Kilian. Phil will be deeply missed.

Phil will be interred at a Catholic Cemetery in suburban Chicago.
