Commander Philip H. Thom U.S. Navy (ret.) passed away on July 28, 2018, at the age of 91.
Philip was born October 8, 1926 in Little Rock, AR. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1949.
In 1950, he received his naval aviator wings and served as a commissioned officer until his retirement in 1975. His assignments included staff under the Commander of U.S. Forces in Europe as well as operations officer of the U.S. Naval Air Station Bermuda. In 1955 Philip was decorated with the French naval aviator award (Aeronautique Naval) for his role in qualifying the first French squadron aircraft carrier night landings. He also received two master's degrees and taught at both the U.S. Naval Academy and the University of New Mexico.
Philip will be remembered by his wife of 54 years, Geraldine, his son Roger (Susie) and his daughters from his 1st marriage to Emma Thurber, Cherie (Grover), Irene (Steve), Carol, Amy (Jack), by his brothers Sidney Thom of Little Rock, AR and Ron Thom of Steamboat Springs, CO. He will also be fondly remembered by his 10 grandchildren, Collin, Rhiannon, Hillary, Meredith, Seth, Steven, Alyssa, Sophie, Chloe and Maci as well as 5 great-grandchildren.
He was an active member of the First Congregational Church in Salt Lake City, UT.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00pm, on Saturday, August 18, at the First Congregational Church, 2150 Foothill Dr., SLC, with Pastor Marijke Rossi officiating.
There will be an open house in Philip Thom's memory at 3170 S. Kaibab Way, SLC from 5:00pm - 7:00pm, Saturday, August 18.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
