I had the privilege of getting to know Ray when we both served on the Salt Lake City Mosquito Abatement Board in the early 2000's. We became friends. I enjoyed working with him on the board and getting to know his wife, Yo. I always appreciated his thoughtful guidance, wisdom, and sincere kindness. He also gave some of his time to help me with my dissertation. What a good soul. I will miss him.

Raymond Uno was the first friend I met at the Pomona Assembly Center in May of 1942. We both were 11 years old, and Raymond was a month older than me, but we enjoyed playing marbles together. Once we were told we had to relocate to the Heart Mountain Concentration Camp, our blocks were side by side, but we made new friends among the barracks we were living and only saw each other at school. Once we left Heart Mountain, his family went to Ogden, and mine to Brigham City in Utah. We kept in touch and would get together with our Heart Mountain classmates and see each other if he was in California or I was in Utah. We were always there for each other and the last time I saw him was in Salt Lake City in September of 2022. I will truly miss my longtime friend Judge Raymond Uno but his friendship will be with me as long as I live. Raymond, my dear friend, may you rest in peace.

As a third generation Sansei and a descendent of the Heart Mountain incarceration experience, I have known Judge Uno my entire life and spiritually before I was born. Raymond and my parents were only 11 years old when they were forced from their homes on the West Coast and sent to Heart Mountain incarceration camp. Raymond lost his father, a WWI vet, who died in his sleep following a USO meeting held in camp. My parents lost contact with Raymond over the years but my mother and I would read the JACL's Pacific Citizen together in Ann Arbor, Michigan and read of all of Raymond's articles and his column "UNO BAR". My parents reunited with Raymond in 1981 when my Dad became Chair of the U of U Pharmaceutics. Raymond recruited my mother to become active in the Heart Mountain Wyoming Foundation and they co-chaired one of the most successful reunions shortly thereafter. Raymond spoke at my mother's memorial service in 2005, we celebrated the grand opening of our world class museum in 2011, and he officiated my only son's wedding in 2015. I spoke about my relationship and history with the Judge in my book, www.setsukossecret.com and I treasure the memories, his accomplishments and the good he has done for this country.

I was an employee within the Criminal Justice System, and I had the opportunity to attend many of Judge Uno´s court sessions .
I very much admired his patience, courtesy, and kindness not only to the various officer´s of the court, but also to the individuals who were appearing before him. I was impressed that although he was tasked to impose a sentence on many individuals, he never stripped them of their dignity while he was doing so. I have the upmost respect for him. May he forever rest in peace. My condolences to his family.

Judge Uno did all kinds of good things for the community at large and the Japanese-American community in particular over a long life of dedicated service. That's common knowledge. I got to know the judge in a different way -- playing basketball. We were the two shortest guys who played regularly in the gym that served as the first floor of the old jail on 500 South so Ray and I got to cover each other more often than not. You get to know what a person is truly like when you play ball against them and I came to know the judge as a tough competitor who made up for his lack of physical skills (mostly height) by doing everything right. He was a tough defender and you couldn't move him once he established position. He played clean and called his fouls. I consider him a dear friend. My condolences to Tab (an acquaintance since right after high school) and the brothers I don't know. We've lost a great man.

As a lawyer, Judge Uno was always one of my favorites. He was bright, kind, understanding, and had a keen legal mind. Utah has lost one of the best.
