Richard Smith Obituary

Richard Scott Smith

1939 - 2023

Salt Lake City, Utah-

Richard Scott Smith, 1939 - 2023, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's, passed away on December 12th, surrounded by loved ones. Born into a military family in San Francisco, Rich developed a love of the West while growing up in CA, UT, and AZ, later becoming a collector of Native American and Western art.

Predeceased by his parents Robert Denton and Virginia Bills Smith, Rich is survived by his devoted wife of 46 years, Shirley, sons Scott and Michael, and beloved grandchildren Torrey, Madison and Ian Smith.

A man of intellect, Rich found solace in literature, classical music, nature's beauty, and adored animals, especially his huskies. He and Shirley lived a wonderful life and traveled the world, creating unforgettable memories together.

Rich cherished his grandchildren and shared a special bond with them. A kind-hearted man with strong opinions, a love for humor, and a mischievous streak, Alzheimer's may have taken much, but these core traits remained resilient till the end.

A Northwestern Bachelor's and Arizona State Doctorate alumnus, Rich excelled as a scientist at Johnson & Johnson's Scripps Clinic, La Jolla, CA. His groundbreaking work, patented and published in esteemed scientific journals, pioneered diagnostics for hepatitis, high cholesterol and HIV, to name a few.

Renowned for his selflessness, he championed collective success for the greater good, earning the deep admiration of his colleagues. True to character, Rich pledged his body to Alzheimer's research at the University of Utah while his wish for a private family celebration in his favorite locations honors his spirit.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Alzheimer's Research in Rich's memory. His legacy lives on through his kindness, scientific contributions, and the enduring impact he had on those fortunate to know him.
