Robert Defa Obituary

Robert Joseph Defa

1949 ~ 2023

Hunter, Utah-Husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, Robert J. Defa lost a five-year battle with cancer on March 7th at age of 73. Born in 1949 to Mary and Joseph Defa, Robert was a lifelong resident of Hunter.

A man of high integrity, Robert learned the value of hard work and discipline early in life, committing much of his time helping on the family farm. Those traits were with him to the end.

Robert graduated Cyprus High Class of '68. He served in the U.S. Army departing for Vietnam in Oct '69. He was a proud veteran and never forgot those who didn't come home.

Robert's career began at Kennecott's rail car shop, followed by 30 years at Salt Lake Airport, retiring in 2014. His positive influence on co-workers is legendary.

An expert welder, Robert was well known for his fabrication skills. He never hesitated to use his many talents to help family and friends. He enjoyed his workshop, spending later years creating projects, making repairs. He cherished his classic cars and derived pleasure from the conversations and reunions had at car shows.

Robert's gate was always open. He had a compassionate ear and always made you feel welcome. Phone calls or visits, he liked to listen and catch up on the events of others. He leaves a void for the many people who always had Robert to lean on.

Robert is survived by his wife Nancy of 51 years, sons Robby, Jack and Shawn Kooyman, brothers Richard (Robin) Defa, Ray (Pat) Defa. Grandchildren Shauntae Kooyman, Jessica Faber (Devin), Sam Defa, Sebastian Defa.

A Celebration of Robert's life will be held Monday, March 13th, at Valley View Memorial Park 4335 West 4100 South West Valley City from 6 pm to 8 pm. Grave site will be Tuesday 14th at Valley View Memorial Park 10:00 am to 12:00 pm.

Robert was a great friend of mine when we were kids of the riding bicycles and climbing trees age. He was kind and the best friend a youngster could have. Life got busy at an early age and we drifted apart doing our own things, but I never forgot Robert

Nancy and family, my thoughts and prayers go out to you. I have wonderful memories of growing up on 5600 W and all the families. The Defa boys were a big part of the kids who contributed to my fond memories. Robert was a very fun and kind young man. So sorry for your loss.

My deepest sympathy for the loss of your dear loved one. My siblings and I grew up in Hunter with the Defa family. The integrity and generosity was instilled in them by their loving parents.

He will be missed by everyone who knew him. Know he will always be in your hearts and walk beside you.

My deepest sympathy for your loss. Robert impacted my life in many ways. The custom trailer he made for me more than 20 years ago is still on the road. Great craftsmanship.

Nan, Jack and Rob - I am so sorry for your loss. Words cannot describe the pain and emptiness that losing someone so important causes. I cannot tell you how much it meant to me to have your support when my dad passed away last year. There will be good days and there will be sad days. It does get a little easier and less sad days with time, but the year of firsts is really hard. Just remember the great memories as those firsts happen. I don't know how many times I wanted to text my dad or run and ask him a question and then reality hits. I guess we are all getting older and no longer kids. Growing up is really hard to do. You are in my thoughts.
