Rodney Brady Obituary

Rodney H. Brady
Jan. 31, 1933 - Jan. 9, 2017
Salt Lake City, UT-Rodney Howard Brady, our loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, professional colleague, and friend passed away on January 9, 2017, at his home. He courageously fought autoimmune hemolytic anemia for over thirty years and Alzheimer's disease for the past three years.
Rodney was born on January 31, 1933, in Sandy, Utah, the second of four children, to Kenneth A. and Jessie (Madsen) Brady. They provided him an ideal heritage and environment where he could excel in academic achievement and spiritual development. They instilled in him a strong work ethic. While in high school, Phil Goldbranson inspired Rod to spend a long weekend developing 100 goals he would like to accomplish and the steps required to achieve them. He took this assignment seriously and attributed much of his success to those goals. He excitedly gave countless goal setting speeches to diverse audiences throughout his life.
He graduated from Jordan High School in 1951 as valedictorian and from the University of Utah with High Honors, earning degrees of Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Master of Business Administration in 1957. He then earned a Doctor of Business Administration degree from Harvard University.
In 1960, while serving as a lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force, he married Carolyn "Mitzi" Hansen, a fifth grade teacher and also a University of Utah graduate. Rod said, "I could have accomplished very little without her."
His major professional assignments were:
•Vice President, Management Systems Corp. (management consulting), Cambridge, MA
•Vice President, Hughes Tool Company (aerospace), Los Angeles, CA
•Assistant Secretary, U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, Washington, D.C.
•Chairman, President's Sub-Cabinet Executive Officer's Group, Washington, D.C.
•Executive Vice President, Bergen Brunswig Corp. (pharmaceuticals), Los Angeles, CA
•President, Weber State College, Ogden, UT
•President, Bonneville International Corp. (nation-wide broadcasting), Salt Lake City, UT
•President, Deseret Management Corp. (international holding co.), Salt Lake City, UT
He also served as director for many commercial and non-profit enterprises. He retired from corporate life in 2009. He documented his life in volumes available at local university libraries. Among his special interests were marathon running, astronomy, bird watching, family history, writing, gardening and public service.
Rod enthusiastically enjoyed scouting his entire life. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout as a boy and loved working on scouting requirements with his sons, each of them attaining the rank of Eagle. He was always interested in his grandsons' progress in scouting. He served for more than 40 years in national and regional Boy Scout leadership roles and received the Silver Beaver, Silver Antelope, and Silver Buffalo awards.
He received honorary doctoral degrees from the University of Utah, Weber State University, and Snow College. Hall of fame inductions include: Utah Broadcasters, University of Utah College of Science, and University of Utah David Eccles School of Business.
He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving as a missionary in the British Mission from 1953 to 1955 (where he met personally with Sir Winston Churchill), as Bishop of the Westwood California Ward, and as President of the Los Angeles California Stake.
He is survived by his wife Mitzi, three sons Howard (Victoria), Ryan (Kristy), and Brooks (Nicole), and eight grandchildren, Blythe, Hayden, Spencer, Matthew, Grant, Kenton, Creed, and Miles. He is also survived by siblings "K" (Faye), Joanne (Dean) Frandsen, and Lindsay (Darlene).
His family is grateful for the kind and very professional care he received from Marlene, Lili, Sammie, Leni, Arlinda, Lio, Mele, and hospice nurse Jamie during the last eighteen months of his life.
He will be honored at a funeral service at the Federal Heights Ward Building - 1300 East Fairfax Road; SLC, UT 84103 on Saturday, January 21, 2017, at 11:00 AM. Viewings will be held at Larkin Mortuary - 260 East South Temple; SLC, UT 84111 on Friday, January 20, 2017, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and one hour prior to the funeral service at the Federal Heights Ward Building. Interment will be at the Salt Lake City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, do a good turn in Rod's memory.

Dear Mitzi,
A family crisis of our own prevented us from seeing you personally during the celebration of Rod's life. We send our love and gratitude for your friendship and Rod's leadership at Bonneville International. The Tabernacle Choir benefited greatly from his cooperative efforts to broadcast the Choir's voice throughout the world.
With one and appreciation,
Jerry and JoAnn

Mitzi
We met you in Westwood Ward. What a wonderful example of a true LDS family! When our house burned down on Christmas 1975, all were there to comfort and aid us.
We appreciate and love you. We have followed your career as years went by and marvel at the blessings of the Lord to his faithful. We also served the cub scouts, but not at the national level like Rod. Snow keeps us from the service, but know that we are with you in spirit. A great man has gone to his reward. We recently moved to Logan, Utah after 25 years in Alaska and North Carolina
Love you,
Ron and Gay Pendleton

Dear Mitzi and Sons,
It is with sadness that I write this farewell message for your husband and father. It was back in 1978 that I first met all of you, when as Faculty Women Association President, I welcomed you to Ogden and Weber State College! What dear friends you all were to me, especially when my husband Dr. Rodney Neff died. Dr. Brady made sure that I and my young children were taken care of during a very difficult time. He and you, Mitzi, stayed friends throughout the years, long after you left Weber State and Ogden. Know of my love for you and him!
With condolences and love, Karen Neff Miner

President Brady was indeed a great man. Our family is saddened to learn of his passing. He was a great friend to my Dad who worked closely with him at Weber State. I am pretty sure they both bled purple. Dad also had a special place in is heart for Mitzi and the boys. Our condolences go out to the Brady family for your loss.

As I succeeded Rod at DMC I quickly realized I could never adequately fill his shoes. I saw first hand the astonishing number of people he touched and taught, the remarkably dedicated service he gave with modesty and generosity, the great faith he had in others and in God, and the Christ-like way he just went about doing good. He will be missed by many including me, but I rejoice in his productive, noble, inspiring life! With love and admiration, Mark Willes

Our condolences to Mitizi and family. Rod was CEO of Bonneville during part of my tenure there; he was a great leader, consensus builder, quiet coach and always inspired us to travel the high road. In short, a great person. RIP.

In behalf of my father, Harold C. Yancey, I send love and condolences to your family. Dad passed away just a few months ago. He admired Rod's talents, wisdom, and valued his association and friendship. I hope they have had time for a brief reunion! May you find peace through your faith, the comfort of our Savior and many sweet memories.

Of Rod Brady.

I read a maxim that an amateur practices until he gets it right, while a professional practices until he can't get it wrong.

In my more than ten years reporting to, serving with, and knowing Rod Brady, I affirm that Rod is a professional, a man of principle, a man of faith in God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ, and a friend, a man who embodies, reflects, and taught the then Bonneville International values of integrity, excellence, service, leadership, and profitability.

Marilynne and I express our condolences and our love to you, Mitzie, and to your children and grandchildren.

I first met Rod and Mitzi as a new neophyte LDS member at their Holmby Hills Residence in 1974 shortly after my baptism. A year later I left to serve in Arizona, Tempe, under Elder Jack H. Goaslind. Rod was my Stake President when I returned and when I married my wife, the former Nadine Halls of SLC. She died in a vehicular accident 1995.

After her death my three surviving daughters and I relocated to SLC and I maintained some contact then, Like Rod I got a MBA, and almost a DBA, but Nadine's death was too much then to complete the dissertation.

You may remember me as as a deaf individual who had done astonishingly well despite so little hearing.

I have always thought of the wonderful experiences I had with President Brady in Los Angeles.

God be with you...

Your home in Holmby HIlls was one of my first places that I attended a Church Function after my baptism in 197. Some sort of social/fireside. A year later I left for Arizona Tempe under Elder Jack H. Goaslind to serve as a missionary. President Brady was Stake President when I came home and several months later when I married my wife, the former Nadine Halls of SLC, UT. She died in 1995.

Like Rod I got my MBA too and then nearly a doctorate, but a horrific personal tragedy ended that.

I have nothing but wonderful thoughts of the times we had in Los Angeles, and then maintaining some contact after moving to Utah. My wife recently had bilateral knee replacements from a orthopedic surgeon who is a relative of his (Brady) who is so wonderfully gracious and competent like Rod was.

Dear Mitzi and family,

I was saddened to hear of Rod's passing on the radio while returning from San Antonio. Rod was a brilliant man but more a wonderful friend. I treasure the times we had together. He made life fun through all the ups and downs.
I thank you, Mitzi, for your tender care of him during the last years. You two were a marvelous couple. He shall not be forgotten.
Much love,
Julie Thomson

Rod Brady's passing is sad news for me. One of the joys of my years in Salt Lake City was my association with him, and I never left his presence without a smile on my face. I send my condolences to Mitzi and all the family, and look forward to the time when I can see him again.

I am so sorry for your loss. It is always so very hard to lose a loved one in death and our loving Heavenly Father is very aware and understand your painful loss. He will listen to your prayer and pay attention to your pleas for help because he is near to all those calling on him. In the days of your distress, he will answer you. Find comfort that your loved one will live again. (Psalms 86:6-7) Your family and friends have my deepest condolences.
