Sorry to hear that my friend died. I knew Russell and his family since High School. I also served in the Army. We were good friends who argued about and played chess. I moved from Utah in 1989. My parents told me that he stopped by to talk to them occasionally up until they moved from Utah in 2002.

I first met Russ in 1976 at a University of Utah chess tournament. besides chess we had a shared experience, Army service in Vietnam. We became close friends and remained so over the years. He was well known in Salt Lake City and Ogden chess circles. He will be missed.

I cherish the memory of him spending hours teaching me chess strategies. Rest in peace Russell Gumbrecht!
