Shannon Patrick Flynn

1957 - 2021

After a three-year battle with lung cancer that eventually metastasized to his brain, Shannon Patrick Flynn passed away in his Gilbert, Arizona home on Thursday, October 28, 2021. Mercifully, his wife and children were able to be with him during his last moments.

Shannon was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on December 27, 1957 to Edith Calderwood and Loyal Wayne Flynn. The majority of his childhood and adolescence was spent in the suburb of Taylorsville. A lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Shannon labored as a missionary in the Brazil São Paulo South Mission. His sojourn in Brazil proved to be one of the most significant and formative times of his life.

Several years after his return from missionary service, Shannon met the woman that would prove to be the love of his life, Robyn Case. They were married in Salt Lake City on August 15, 1983. Over the course of the next decade, the couple would bring four children into the world. During this period, Shannon worked in various professions and obtained a degree in history from the University of Utah, which was one of his proudest achievements. Shannon and his family would eventually relocate to Gilbert, Arizona where he and Robyn successfully ran a small business for nearly two decades.

Shannon's hobbies and interests were varied and wide-ranging. Whether it was dealing rare historical documents, photography, adding a new firearm to his collection, or making regular visits to Disney theme parks with his family, his enthusiasm could never be questioned. He was a longtime member of the Mormon History Association and a published author. To say Shannon was a bibliophile would be an understatement. He was always on the lookout for a new book containing undiscovered knowledge for him to internalize. Even after his move to Arizona, Shannon especially loved to frequent Benchmark Books — a Salt Lake City-based LDS bookstore — to find a long-sought-after work of B.H. Roberts or an obscure pamphlet published in the early twentieth century.

Shannon's uncommon work ethic, industriousness, and ability to foster lifelong friendships were only overshadowed by the deep love and pride he held for his family. The joy he radiated during college graduations, wedding ceremonies, and the first-time meetings of grandchildren could be felt by all.

Shannon was preceded in death by his mother and father, Edith Calderwood and Loyal Flynn, as well as his sister, Calene Hacking. He is survived by his wife, Robyn; his daughters, Morgan (Rick) and Kaytlin; his sons, Patrick and Collin (Brooklyn); his grandchildren, Agnes (5), George (2), and an unborn son of Collin and Brooklyn; and his sister, Erin Fletcher.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, November 6, 2021 at the Pinecrest Ward, 2080 East Pinecrest Lane, Sandy, UT. Viewings will be held on Friday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 East Dimple Dell Road (10600 South), Sandy, UT and Saturday morning from 9:30 - 10:30 am prior to the services at the church.
