Sherry Barlow Obituary

Sherry Jacobsen Barlow 1942 ~ 2008 Gone to Hawaii Our beloved Sherry Jacobsen Barlow passed away peacefully in her home July 28, 2008, after a courageous seven-year battle with breast cancer. Sherry was born September 15, 1942 in Salt Lake City to Vernon Thomas Jacobsen and Leah Taylor Jacobsen. She married Roger A. Barlow on March 23, 1961. Shortly after, they moved to Hawaii where they made their home for the next eight years. Sherry loved hiking, camping, swimming, snorkeling, biking, attending concerts and peace rallies, frolicking in the autumn leaves, being a Cub Scout den leader, teaching primary children and traveling with her family. She took great delight in being with her children and grandchildren, always making time to be a part of their lives. Sherry lived her life with humor, warmth, compassion, grace, love and gentleness. The example she set will be carried on by all who knew her. After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001, she became a devoted supporter for breast cancer awareness; she always looked forward to participating in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Although in declining health, her positive and optimistic spirit helped her participate in this year's Race in a wheel chair. She was able to walk the last 100 meters and crossed the finish line in victory with the support of her family. She is survived by her husband Roger A. Barlow of Bountiful, Utah, and her six children; Jeffrey A. Barlow, Sandy, Utah; Michael L. Barlow (Jessica), Salt Lake City, Utah; James E. Barlow (Rebecca), Centerville, Utah; John T. Barlow (Kacy), North Salt Lake, Utah; Jake Barlow (Natalie), Bountiful, Utah; Christy Barlow, Grand Junction, Colorado. Also survived by 20 grandchildren, her brother Douglas V. Jacobsen (Shirley), Layton, Utah, and many nephews, nieces, cousins, close friends and neighbors. Preceded in death by her parents, her sister Shawna Jacobsen Spafford, and her cat Popeye. There will be a gathering of Sherry's family and friends to celebrate her life at The Memorial House in Memory Grove Park, 485 N. Canyon Road (120 E.), Salt Lake City on Friday, August 1 with remarks at 10:30 a.m. followed by a celebration until 1:00 p.m. Casual or aloha wear welcome. The family would especially like to thank Teri Noble. We would also like to thank Doctors Ross E. Morgan, Mark J. Ott, June M. Steely, Randall J. Ryser, Kerry S Fisher, and their staffs, as well as LDS Hospital, IHC Medical Center, Homecare, Hospice, and the many nurses and aides. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation or the Huntsman Cancer Institute. Aloha Nui Nui

Dear Roger and Family,
We are so sorry to hear about Sherry. When we first moved into the Bountiful Twelfth Ward, she was my visiting teacher and I grew to love her. I loved working with the boys in cubbing and Scouts and Sherry was always so supportive. When little Christie came along, Sherry was ecstatic to finally have a daughter. That sweet little girl always looked like a princess and Sherry was so proud of her. Sherry loved Roger and did everything she could to make him happy. May all of you be blessed and comforted at this time.

Roger and family,
I just found out about Sherry and am sorry I didn't know in time to go to her funeral. I am so sad to know she went through so much. I loved being neighbors with all of you. I have so many happy memories of us swimming, walking and riding bikes together. Sherry started a swimming class at the old Bountiful pool when Jeff was a baby. The men at the pool said that no women would want to swim early in the morning. Sherry talked them into getting us a teacher and letting us try to get women to come. We had so much fun together as a class. Because of Sherry, the women in Bountiful still have early morning swim times!

I remember when she got all the kids up at about 3 or 3:30 in the morning thinking that they were late for school because she thought the clock said 8:30 am.

I have fun memories of all of the kids, too. The years we spent as neighbors was a wonderful time.

May God be with all of you.

Love, Sandra Gwilliam

Barlow Family: I am sorry for your loss, I love Sherry for her smile as she spoke of her family her grandchildren, her children, her times with everyone. Everytime I would run into her at a store she would take time to talk to me and remind me of times she shared with my son Dion (Cardenas) and how he was part of your family. I am gratefull for all she and you as a family have done for us. May her smile be forever in your minds. God Bless you all. Mary Rivera

Mike, Jessica and the Barlow Family,

I was saddened to learn of the passing of your Mother this last week. Julie and I would like to extend our deepest sympathies to you and your family in this difficult time.

Find comfort in knowing that your Mother no longer suffers and is not in pain but is surrounded by Angels and the heavenly spirit. Always remember that her spirit will always be nearby, as she will be watching over you from this heavenly place.

Remember what a beautiful person she was. The love felt in the comments of her friends and family are a testament to this.

I feel so blessed to have known Sherry. She has always treated me like I was part of the family. Their door was always open and Sherry and Roger always greeted me with a smile. I will miss her at the soccer games and family gatherings. She always said that we were her reason for being here. She loved her family and friends dearly and we will all miss her. Sherry thank you for being part of my life and making me laugh. The Mann story ..... I just laugh when I remember your telling that one. Lots of Love to all of you

To All Barlows,

My heart aches for each and every one of you. May all her Children remember her UNCONDITIONAL love and understanding. Sunsets and Iced tea. Orange rinds. Laughter to heal the pain. The very glue of the whole family. And the peace knowing she was welcomed to her new spiritual life by her Dad, Mom and Sister. May you all find peace through the pain.

Jeff and kids,

I'm so sorry for the loss of your mom and grandma. I know this will leave a great void in your life, but not in your hearts, she was very very loved. I wish I would have known her but I can tell she was a wonderful person by the kind of children she raised and how much she was loved by her grandchildren.
With Love,
Ronna and kids

Mike and Barlow Family,

My heart is heavy at reading of your sweet Mothers passing. I love Sherry. She was always so happy and positive about everything. Oh how she loves her family. I saw her in Smith's right before I moved, we hugged, laughed and cried while sharing a doughnut and diet pepsi. I love how her granddaughters look so much like her. I am very sad for your loss, the void will be great. I am very happy for her, no more pain. My how we will all miss her. Carry her memories with you always and visit them often. She is now your angel. Let me know if I can do anything. I am with you always. Again, my deepest sympathy. I love you always. Laura and Family
