Shirrell Larsen Obituary

Shirrell L. Larsen
1936-2013
Shirrell L. Larsen, beloved husband, uncle and friend, was born August 10, 1936, in Cedar City, Utah, to Beatrice Shirrell and Lloyd D. Larsen. He died in the loving arms of Susan, his wife of over 45 years, Saturday, June 29, 2013.
He left Cedar High one year early having received a Ford Foundation Early Admission Scholarship. He graduated in philosophy with highest honors at the age of 19, after only three years at the University of Utah, ranking #1 nationwide among over 2000 Ford Scholars in their achievement exams, and in later years attended graduate school at U.C. Berkeley, University of Utah and Rutgers. He was teaching Logic at the University of Utah when he met his sweetheart, Susan Brim; they were married February 2, 1968 in the Salt Lake Temple after Shirrell joined the LDS Church in 1965.
ShirreIl's health problems plus responsibility for elderly relatives interrupted his plans for an academic career, but he never stopped thinking and writing about serious philosophical issues, all the while collecting a library of thousands of books. Shirrell began a career in the early 1970s in the sports handicapping business, publishing nationally circulated newsletters, "Larsen's Basketball Forecaster" and "Larsen's Football Forecaster". During the 1980s and 1990s Shirrell and Susan enjoyed delightful multiple tours to Europe, New York, and the West Coast where they appreciated the best the world has to offer in great art, music and theatre. Shirrell was not only a true scholar but also a gentleman, always truthful, kind and thoughtful of his wife and others, possessing an unforgettable wit and gift for making people laugh.
He is survived by his wife, Susan, his brother, Curtiss (Denece) Larsen, sister, Lorena Langston and many nieces and nephews. He will be missed by many dear friends. The family appreciates the loving care given to him by his niece, Rebecca Munoz, and his nephew, Alex Larsen and First Choice Home Health & Hospice. Family and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Service on Monday, July 8, 2013 at 12:00 noon at the Monument Park 17th Ward, 2795 E. Crestview Drive. A viewing will be held the evening of July 7, 2013 between 6 and 8 pm at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple and one hour prior to services at the ward from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Interment will follow at the Willard Cemetery, Willard, Utah.
