Steven Luker Obituary

Steven Thomas Luker Beloved Father and Teacher Steve was born January 1, 1948 and returned to his loving parents and Father in Heaven May 4, 2008 at the age of 60 after a 22 year battle with Multiple Sclerosis. Born in Salt Lake City to Elizabeth and Harold Luker, Steve attended South High and later obtained his Masters Degree from the University of Utah. From 1967 to 1969 Steve was enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Viet Nam War. He taught the hearing impaired for the Davis School District for 17 years. Steve loved his students and deeply touched many lives in the short time he was able. Students were so touched by his gift, they continued to visit years after their education was completed. Dad, your loss will be felt for a long time, but we take solace in the fact that you are finally free. It was an honor and a privilege to care for you. Survived by two sons: Jason T. Luker and Michael D. Luker; sister Yvonne Bruhnke, (Doug Bruhnke, husband); and Stephanie Bruhnke (niece) and preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Elizabeth Luker. Steve's sons would like to give a special Thank You to the Director of Nursing and all the employees at the V.A. Nursing Home. You are not forgotten!
A Mentor, Teacher and Friend. Steve taught me the value of an Education and the importance of Life and Family. Steve taught me never to hide behind the label of being hearing impaired and to strive to be the best. You will be missed!

I was one of Mr. Luker's students at Bountiful Junior High School in the early 1990s. He made sure that I understood all my classwork and that I received good grades. At Christmas time one year, he gave me a huge stuffed dog that has been passed on to my nieces and nephews to play with.
He helped me to succeed and be a better person because junior high was a tough time for a hearing impaired person! He was one of the many hearing teachers that helped to shape who I am today and not let being hearing impared get in the way of anything! I have graduated from college and work for the health department to help others improve their lives the way Mr. Luker was a part of mine. My prayers are with your family.

I am sorry to hear about your loss. I went through the same program at the U of U as your dad. I remember many classes with him. None of us knew he had excellent art talent until one day we were trying to teach a deaf student what a walrus was. He finally walked up to the chalkboard and drew one. Best wishes...Brent

Jason and Mike,
I'm sorry to hear of the passing of your Father. He was truly one of the good guys!! I will always remember him trying to get me, a BYU fan, to sing the Utah fight song. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.

Jason, I also just heard about the passing of your Dad and am so sorry I missed the funeral. Steve was my scout master for a number of years and was always a positive influence in my life. He had an amazing way of making everyone feel comfortable when they were around him. He was always a great example of being a person with unconditional love for all. He will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers will be with you and your family.

Luker Family:

Mike & Jason, Steve was one of my greatest hero's. I first met him in 1st grade and he worked with me until my softmore year in High school. He would share stories about you two playing football and how well you guys played in your games. I always wanted to meet you two. I have thought much about Steve in the years that have past and I will always have fond memories of his warmth and kindness to me as one of his students. I don't know if Steve ever told you about me, but he would bring me some of my favorite chocolate chip cookies to eat while we worked on an assignment or some extra credit project. We did every thing from almost burning down my Jr High school (I know it wasn't funny at the time but looking back it was quite an experience) to going out to eat at his favorite pizza place in Salt Lake City. I am now married to Amber with four children Dallin 7, Dailee 5, Lily 2, Jasmine 1 month. We reside in Idaho Falls, ID and I am a sucessful Accountant. With out a doubt Steve was a huge part in shaping who and what I am today. He helped motivate me to become an Eagle scout. I haven't had contact with for for about 12 years but his influence, kindness, generosity, and has not been forgotten by one of his favorite students-Jason Blundell. My only regret is, I wish I could have said good by to him one last time.

Lovingly

Jason and Mike,
We were saddened to hear of Steve's death. We knew Steve and Sally when we both lived on Chadwick St. in Sugarhouse. We both had a Old English Sheep dog and loved having them as neighbors and friends. It has been many years since we ran in to Steve. He was a great man and friend. May you have peace in your heart at this time to help you endure missing him. Our thoughts and prayers are with you both.

Jason and Mike,
I just barely heard about your Dad and apologize for not being at the services it was already too late. I have great memories of chatting with your Dad when we were younger. He always had a great attitude for life even with the challenges he faced. Take care of yourselves and your family.

Jason and Mike, the care you've given to your father these past years, day in and day out, has been extraordinary. Like your father you are very, very special. A great man has been lost and two great men continue his legacy.

Born, raised and a member of the Greek Orthodox Church, Steve’s good friend from childhood is Father Elias of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral. We extend our special thanks to Father Elias for his continual love and support to Steve and our family.

To the boys:

I can remember your dad in the Butler 8th ward each time I came to church in my youth. I was so impressed with his kindness and gentle nature. I've often thought about him over the 25 years since that time. I'm glad he is finally finished with his suffering.
