Stuart Sprouse Obituary

Stuart J. Sprouse
"Stu"
1936 ~ 2016
Our devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend, Stuart J. Sprouse, passed away peacefully at home, where he most loved to be, on August 16, 2016.
Born August 22, 1936, to Stanley W Sprouse and Lucille Stuart in Montpellier, Idaho. He developed a passion for family and horses from his uncles as a young boy.
On June 13, 1956, Stu married the love of his life, Thurma Lee Yates, after just 4 weeks of dating. Soon after, he was deployed with the Air Force to Saudi Arabia during the Suez Canal Conflict. They were later sealed in the Jordan River Temple.
Although he started out as a TV repairman, his love for horses was very strong. He bought a saddle long before he had a horse. Upon acquiring horses, he built a barn in Sandy, UT, where they later built their home of 47 years. The barn was the beginning of S Bar S Stables where he has boarded horses for over 30 years. Many young adults who also loved horses learned strong work ethics and were forever impacted by him.
Stu was actively involved in the community and was well known for his great love of young people, and he loved helping them. He was a lifetime member of the Salt Lake County Mounted Sheriff's Posse, President and Lifetime member of the UQHA and member of the UQHA Hall of Fame, Vice President of the Utah Quarter Horse Racing Association, Director to AQHA, Board member of Utah County Farm Bureau and was a member of and rode in the re-enactment of the Pony Express for many years. He also loved helping with the 4-H and supporting the youth in equine activities. He enjoyed volunteering during the 2002 Winter Olympics. He retired from Cottonwood Hospital where he had many dear friends. In his spare time, he provided sound and timers for many equestrian events with his company S and S TV & Sound. Stu loved his summers at Lake Powell and Bear Lake with family and relished his trips with family and friends to Hawaii. Above all else, he loved his family most.
Survived by his wife Thurma Lee; 3 children Terry (Russell), Jack, Steven (Buffy); 6 grandchildren Brandee (Jeremy), Jordan, Connor, Colton, Sierra and Destinee;1 great grandchild Maddisyn and 3 sisters Susan (Neil), Tracy, Teri (John). Preceded in death by his parents, stepmother Barbara Sprouse and sister Shannon.
Stu's wonderful smile, twinkling blue eyes and loving generosity will be missed. More than anything we will miss his nicknames, rhymes and cowboy poetry.

I think of you often and what you taught me in my early days of horses. I'll never forget when I said I wanted to get my horses papers and pedigree and you said "What are you gonna do, teach him to read? He knows who he is." We both laughed and I never did get those papers btw. Happy memories. I've since moved on and out of state and I'm finally going to horse shows all these years later. Stu, I think you'd be proud that I did that and have started going to those dressage shows. I had better scores than the pros at my second show and I won my classes. You would have been proud. I miss you. I'll never forget you and the love of horses we shared together.

Hi Lee,

Sorry to hear about Stu's passing. I very much enjoyed working with him at Semco so many years ago. I remember seeing him at sporting events placing barrels or setting up timing equipment. I think you'll remember my wife Kim who worked with you at State Farm. We loved getting to know both of you. Unfortunately, she passed away in 2006. Best wishes to you and the family.

I am so sorry to hear of Stu's passing. I knew him from years ago during riding club competitions. He was always so generous of his time volunteering and keeping it fun. Stu Sprouse was well mounted; a true Horseman. He will be missed.

Dearest Lee, Terry and the entire Sprouse Family.

I was so sorry to see that your Loved One had passed. I had the privilege of meeting Stuart and I have very fond memories. He was always so kind and a gentlemen in every sense of the word. When I used to hear Terry speak with him on the phone I would get so jealous because their relationship reminded me of the relationship I had with my Dad, whom I miss so much. I know that his passing will make for a huge void in your lives. Soon that void will be filled with fond memories and your Love for him will never fade. I pray that those memories will sustain you during this very difficult time and I pray that Stuart will Rest In Peace.

Lee,
I am so sorry. I will miss Stu. My favorite memory is when Boo first arrived at the barn, Stu assuring me he would check on Boo and make sure he gained weight and get his TB confidence back. And he did! He checked on my boy every day. I will miss him riding around the barn, stopping to visit and checking on everyone. Tina Farrell
