Thomas Flinders and Linda J. Flinders

Thomas Flinders Obituary

Thomas Flinders &Linda J. Flinders Together  SAMARIA, ID- Thomas Engh Flinders, 55, and his wife Linda Ann Johnson Flinders, 55, died March 18, 2003, of injuries sustained in an auto accident.  Tom was born June 18, 1947, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the son of George Trueman and Elizabeth Louise Engh Flinders.  Linda was born December 17, 1947, in San Luis Obispo, California, the daughter of Elbert C. Jordan and Hazel Smothers. They were married on November 25, 1972, in Elko, NV. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Tom served in the Northern States Mission, as a High Councilman and other church callings. Linda had served in ward and stake Relief Societies, Young Women's and Primary callings. Together they served a stake mission. When Tom and Linda took on the partnership of marriage, it was forever. They could always be seen together in the office, on the range, in corrals, or in the kitchen. They were truly a team. Tom's gentle teasing was noticed by nearly all who knew him. Linda's greatest talents lay in being a good mother, grandmother and honest friend. She liked family gatherings where she could be with her children and grandchildren and serving her family and her husband or anyone else that she felt had the slightest need. Her artistic abilities were evidenced in her home and how she attired herself. Tom was one of the brighter stars in the galaxy of humanity. He majored in Business at the University of Utah and had a tremendous zest for life. He could always hold an audiences interest when he recited "The Cremation of Sam McGee" and performing his John Wayne impersonations. He was an excellent auctioneer and loved to auction off Linda and anyone else nearby. Tom was the peacemaker in the family. He could always relieve tension with this sense of humor. He served two terms as a Summit County Commissioner, was a member of the Idaho Cattleman's Association and past president of the Northern Nevada Farm Bureau. Linda had a love of the ocean. She loved seashells, the sound of the waves and would take walks to collect shells. She loved flowers (especially gardenias), her chickens, her dogs, working in her garden, and moving cows with her family.  She attended college at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, CA. Together they owned and operated Flinders Realty and Exchange and the "Buckhorn Ranch" located in Samaria and Snowville. They both had a great love for fine cattle, horses, and range lands.  They are survived by their children, Sophia Tomina (Brandon) Buttars of Garland, UT; Natalie A. (Joshua) Paskett of Samaria, ID; John Thomas Flinders of Samaria, ID; grandchildren, Taber Ann Flinders Paskett, Oakley Blue Paskett, Mesa Dawn Paskett, Britteny Ann Buttars, Tyree Callan Buttars, Daxon James Buttars, Texie Rowell Buttars. He is survived by his brothers, Leland E. , G. Melvin (Sandra) and Jerran T. (Marilyn)Flinders, a sister, Elizabeth (Ronald) Hannay. He was preceded in death by his parents. She is survived by her mother, Hazel Smothers of LaJolla, CA; her grandmother, Hilda Edward of Malad; a brother John Johnson, Wickenburg, AZ; and a sister,Gerry Jordan of Atascadero, CA. Her father preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 22, 2003, 11:00 a.m. at the Malad 2nd Ward Chapel, 20 South 100 West, with Bishop Richard Cornia conducting. John, Sophie and Natalie,

When we moved to Utah and began remodelling the old Spring Creek Ranch house in 1990, your family welcomed us and made us feel part of the community immediately. Our oldest child, Margaret, spent literally days at your place on Old Ranch Road, where she learned all kinds of important stuff (such as cleaning the hen house) and had all kinds of fun. We'll never forget the Little Buckaroo Rodeos! Your parents were simply wonderful people, and it was a privilege to know them.

We pray God will comfort and strengthen you in His love.

I attended school with Tom in Park City. I enjoyed my friendship and association with him. I have many pleasant memories.

I have enjoy my association with the Flinders family. They have shown thoughfulness, kindeness and friendship.

About a year ago I attended a Regional Conference where Elder Neal Maxwell was the presiding General Authority. Elder Maxwell talked about how Judd Flinder(Tom's father) friendshipped his father. I was very happy to know that I had association with this Flinders family. That they were my Park City friends.

I'm sadden and sorry to hear of Tom and Linda's death. It is my hope and pray that Heavenly Father will comfort the family

Sophie, Natalie and John- We are so very sorry that your Dad and Mom had to leave you so suddenly. They were such a great team, Aunt and Uncle and parents. They always had a way of making everyone laugh and they really enjoyed life. We have so many wonderful memories of them that will never be forgotten--especially Aunt Linda's perfume (She always smelled good even while riding horses and working cattle!) and Uncle Tom's jokes. We will always love them and will miss them greatly. Please let us know if there is anything we can do for you. We love you so much!!

Love, The Garn's
