WALLACE SMITH Obituary

Wallace B.Smith 1929 ~ 2010 Wallace Burbidge Smith "Wally", beloved father, grandfather, brother and uncle, died peacefully on December 17, 2010 surrounded by his loving family. Wally was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on May 25, 1929 to Wallace Livingston Smith and Melva Belle Burbidge Smith. He was the oldest of four siblings. After graduating from East High School, Wally joined the Navy and served in Hawaii during World War II until he was honorably discharged in 1950. After returning home after his military service, he met and married Mary Barbara Weggeland. Wally and Barbara had three girls, Martha, Sandra and Mary Jane. Wally was a great father and loved his girls more than anything. Wally was particularly proud of his precious grandchildren, Kenneth Stonebrook, his wife Josilyn Stonebrook, Russell Bruguiere and Sarah Bruguiere. He followed all of their many accomplishments with great interest and pleasure. Wally joined his father and brother, Bradford, in the family business, working for Enoch Smith Sons Paving and Construction and Smith Brothers Paving and Construction for many years. He was an expert heavy equipment operator. Wally paved roads, built golf courses, reservoirs and excavated strip mines throughout the Mountain West. A devoted son, Wally retired a few years early to take care of his mother, whose health gradually declined following the death of her husband. Wally loved to play golf, anywhere, anytime. He was particularly pleased when his two grandsons took up golf and family golf outings were great fun. As a foursome, Wally and his dearest friends, Frank McDonald, Larry Smith, and Newt Moy, played hundreds of rounds of golf together. They were particularly fond of the University of Utah golf course. Wally lived for the past 2 1/2 years at Brighton Gardens, an assisted living community, where he had many friends. Wally is survived by: his children, Martha (Charles) Stonebrook, Taylorsville, Utah, Sandra (Tommy) Bruguiere, Roseland Virginia; his grandchildren, Kenneth Wallace (Josilyn) Stonebrook, Taylorsville, Utah, Russell Thomas Bruguiere, Orlando, Florida, and Sarah Louise Bruguiere, Denton, Texas; his brother, Terry (Carolyn) Smith, Salt Lake City, Utah , sister, Sally Smith, Salt Lake City, Utah and sister-in-law, Pat Smith Forsea, San Jose, California; many nieces, nephews, cousins, his Brighton Gardens "family" and his many treasured friends. Wally was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Bradford, his ex-wife, Barbara, and his daughter, Mary Jane Smith. Funeral services will be held at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah, on December 30, 2010, at 12 noon. Friends may call at Larkin Mortuary on December 29, 2010, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on December 30. Interment at Salt Lake City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in his name to the Salt Lake City Police Mutual Aid Association, P.O Box 145497, Salt Lake City, Utah 84114-5497, attn. Aimee Baarz, or the Roseland Rescue Squad, 7745 Patrick Henry Highway, Roseland, Virginia, 22967. Wally's family would especially like to thank the caring staff at Brighton Gardens (Emeritus) who brought much happiness to his life and the aides and nurses at The Residence of Care Source Hospice who made his final days comfortable and peaceful.

"I am also sorry to learn of Wally's passing. I have great memories of all of you. Your dad was really nice to me and always funny. I remember taking skiing lessons with you one year and your dad would take us up to Brighton. There is one song in particular (I can't recall the name of it at the moment) that whenever I hear it, takes me back to that time in my life and the memories I have of going skiing with you. I loved Barbara and taking piano lessons from her and the fun piano studio you had in both your houses on Wilton and Lancaster. Sandy, you had your father's fun personality. I have good memories of playing with you. Hope you are all doing well. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.

Sorry to hear the news about Wally - great neighbor, great scoutmaster, great friend. Wally, Barbara, Martha, Sandy and Mary Jane were always so nice to our family when we were next-door neighbors. Wally was always ready with a joke. A few were even age-appropriate and clean! I miss my piano teacher, Barbara, too. She was ahead of her time. I remember when she filled her downstairs studio with electric pianos. She taught us in group and private lessons how to improv with just a few basic jazz chords.
