WENDELL SMOOT Obituary

Wendell Smoot 1921 ~ 2011 Wendell M. Smoot Jr., our husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend, passed away surrounded by family at age 90 on July 3rd, 2011 after a long and productive life of service and accomplishment.Wendell was born Januray 15, 1921 in Salt Lake City to Wendell M. Smoot and Rebecca Clawson Smoot. He attended Roosevelt Junior High and East High School where he was active in student government and excelled athletically in track and football. He furthered his education at the University of Utah, where he joined Sigma Chi fraternity, was business manager of the Chronicle and served as captain of the ROTC. He married his college sweetheart Barbara Davis on June 24, 1942, later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple, and went directly in the Army as a commissioned officer in the 44th Infantry during World War II. While leading his artillery unit in France after D-Day, he was seriously wounded, spent a year in rehabilitation and received both the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart decorations. Blessed with abundant energy and leadership skill, he began a highly successful career after the war with JA Hogle & Co brokerage firm. He was an allied member of the New York Stock Exchange at age 40 and became a general partner in Hogle and later with Goodbody & Co. In 1971, he was founder and chairman of the investment counseling and money management firm of Smoot Knoche, which later became Smoot Miller Cheney & Co. The firm was recognized as one of the outstanding investment companies in the western United States. An active nad devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served faithfully in many callings - as a Bishop's counselor, high councilor in the Monument Park Stake, Bishop of the Monument Park 12th Ward and three times fulfilled a non-proselytizing mission with his wife. In 1976-80, he served as financial chairman of the Church's Sesquicentennial celebration. In 1984, after a year as vice-president, he became President of the Mormon Tablernacle Choir. For 17 years he led this wondeful organization in their many world-wide tours, recordings, appearances and activities. He was blessed to work alongside the finest musicians in the Church. He often expressed his great love for the music and the dedicated service of choir members and loyal administrative staff. For him, it was a calling of a lifetime. Wendell participated actively in community and charitable organizations. Scouting was one of his particular interests for over 70 years. In 1969-70, he was President of the Great Salt Lake Council of Boy Scouts where he received Scouting's Silver Beaver award. He served as well in Rotary, the United Way and as Chairman of the Pioneer Memorial Theater Advisory Board. He was a member of the Salt Lake Country Club, the Bonneville Knife and Fork dinner group, the Timpanogos Club and Dinner Set. He was recognized in 1989 with the U of U Emeritus Club Merit of Honor Award. A man of integrity and sound judgement, he knew what mattered most and lived by his values. He knew how to work hard but he also knew how to play. An avid outdoorsman, he spent many hours along with his wife and family at their summer home on the North Fork of the Snake River in Island Park, Idaho. He was never happier than in hip waders walking the sandy shores with fly rod in hand and more than a few fish in his basket. With an exceptional mind for details, he planned and organized family vacations with the same efficiency that he used to take 600 members and guests of the Tabernacle Choir around the world. His enthusiasm for travel was infectious, even if it meant staying in tents on an African safari. There was always another place he wanted to see. A new memory he wanted to make and a wide circle of friends he wanted to enjoy. He was blessed with singular opportunities and he leaves a matchless legacy for his family. He is survived by his wife Barbara and five children: Dr. Wendell M. Smoot III (Monetta) of San Diego; Margaret Smoot; Dr. David J. Smoot; Dr. John D. Smoot of San Diego (Jan); and Mary S. Mather (Jeff) of St. George; 14 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, nephews and a niece. He was preceded in death by his sister, Rebecca S. Marriott and a brother, Stanley C. Smoot. A viewing will be held Friday evening, July 8th, at the Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary (2350 East 1300 South) from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Saturday, July 9th at 12:00 noon, at the Monument Park 17th Ward, 2795 East Crestview Drive (1100 South). Friends may visit with the family prior to the services from 10:30 to 11:30. Burial in the Salt Lake City Cemetery. God be with you, Dad, till we meet again. In lieu of flowers, a contribution to the Great Salt Lake Council, Boy Scouts of America, 525 South Foothill Boulevard, is suggested. Online condolences at www.larkincares.com

To the family of Wendell Smoot,

President Smoot was over the Tabernacle Choir while I was singing with this stellar group. He was a wonderful President in so many ways. One of the first things that impressed me was being set apart by him and Brother Poulson.

May "the peace that passeth understanding" comfort you.

Sincerely,

Jackie F. Robinson formerly S-23, TC

Dear Smoot family,

Wendell was one of the true mentors, role models, and great influences of my childhood. I have the fondest memories of deer hunts, fishing trips, dinners at our home, and his presence speaking at both my brothers and fathers funerals. He was every boys ideal of a father figure and role model. His wit, wisdom, story telling, exemplary service, and captivating smile and words will always be treasured. A giant of a man, leaving an amazing legacy for all who shared his life. Each life who touches one for good is the musical summation of the life of Wendell Smoot.

Dear Smoot family,

The Emeritus Ladies of The Tabernacle Choir will remember President Wendell Smoot as one of our deceased members at our annual luncheon in May.

It was a privilege to join with other former Choir members to sing at his funeral. All of the talks touched my heart. President Smoot instigated the setting apart of members of the Tabernacle Choir, and one of my cherished memories is his doing that for me.

May the Lord comfort you at this time.

Sincerely,
Carolyn Taylor Harmon

Many decades ago we lived in the same area, and I knew some of the children too. The large Smoot monument, in the Provo cemetery near my relatives graves, reminds of the contributions of this family to Utah over the decades.

Barbara, I want you to know that Wendell was such a wonderful Tabernacle Choir president. He made all of us feel so appreciated. I lost my husband 2 1/2 years ago and I know that you will miss Wendell terribly, but at least we know that he is in a much better place.

I feel it a real honor to sing at Wendell's funeral with my Tabernacle Choir friends.

My first years in the Tabernacle Choir were spent with Wendell as the President. I appreciate so much his leadership and kindness. He always safeguarded the members of the choir and always considered our needs and feelings.

I had the privilege of working with him directly when I asked to book the choir for a celebration of an organization I worked with. He agreed and treated me as an equal and a colleague, and I was grateful for his respect and dignity. I feel better for having known him.

Dear John,

It was so cathartic to see you at the East High Reunion. Your father was larger than life, an exemplary leader, bishop & memorable Mormon Tabernacle Choir president. The indelible trip to Russia & to Europe and the inroads he made with that alone, are legendary.

What a reunion he is having with the Monument Park friends, in heaven, now!

Love & Blessings to you, from the Barton family.

Dear Barbara and family,

How we loved and will always love your dear Wendell. We had so many wonderful experiences with him while we sang in the Tabernacle Choir. We traveled the world over with you and your family and you always made us, the Choir, feel like we were all just one big family. Because of President Smoot's wonderful and organized leadership we were able to get into many venues that we otherwise would not have been able to enter. His missionary work was so evident, in all of his actions, in everything he did. His bright smile would make anyone want to "hear more."

We will in singing with the Tabernacle Choir on Saturday and we feel so honored to have been asked so share the services with you, his dear family, and all of his wonderful friends.

With much love

Wendell was a great mentor to me in the investment management industry when I worked for Smoot, Miller, Cheney from 1984 to 1987. He was a wonderful example of integrity, diligence and hard work while showing great skill in personal relationships and compassionate service. His care for me set my career path on a solid foundation. I will forever be grateful for Wendell Smoot in my life.

I knew Wendell as Pres. Smoot with the Tabernacle Choir. I have many great memories of him during our years of association. My condolences to you for your loss.

July 6, 2011

I'm saddened to hear of the passing of this great man whom I learned to regard as a friend. Wendell played an important part in the decision to include a pipe organ in the Conference Center rather than the electronic instrument originally preferred by the presiding authorities. As project manager for the construction of that project I was deeply involved with him as we worked out the size and appearance of the organ as well as accommodations for the choir in the new buiding. I found him to be considerate and understanding of our problems as builders and feel fortunate to have been associated with him however briefly.
My condolences go to his wife and family at this trying time. You are included in my prayers.
