ANNIE BENDELE CRAIN September 23, 1911 - December 28, 2006 Annie Bendele Crain, long time South Texas rancher and former County Judge of McMullen County, Texas has passed away. Known by everyone as Annie Maw, she was an avid hunter and gardener. She lived a full life of 95 years before entering her final resting place in heaven on December 28, 2006. Born on September 23, 1911, one of 11 children, she grew up on a West Texas ranch outside Juno, Texas. She married Jess Crain in 1930. Together they ranched in South Texas and served in public office. When Jess passed away in 1967, Annie Maw took over his position as County Judge of McMullen County. She was later elected twice to the the seat where she served for 6 years. Annie Maw held the distinction as the first woman to serve as County Judge of McMullen County. She ruled with a tight fist and a tender hand and always provided the county with great leadership during a time when few Texas women held public office. Never losing an election she retired from public service to enjoy more time to ranch, travel, hunt, garden and play bridge. She was cherished by many for her signature laugh and dry wit. Her quips and quotes personified her tough, unique personality and tender heart. Annie Maw was preceded in death by her parents, husband Judge Jess Crain, and all ten brothers and sisters.
