ALLAN K. DUBOIS

1945 - 2022

Allan K. DuBois, 76, a devoted husband and beloved brother, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, peacefully went to be with his Lord on Sunday, January 9, 2022, in his San Antonio home after a battle with cancer. His loving wife of 54 years, Pam, was at his side.

Allan was born April 28, 1945, in his parents' hometown of Green Bay, Wisconsin – the oldest of nine children raised in a devout Catholic and military family.

With his father serving a 32-year military career, the family was stationed at various bases, including in Munich, Germany, and Yokohama, Japan. Allan took advantage of opportunities along the way, such as climbing Mount Fuji and earning the rank of Eagle Scout.

The family eventually settled in San Antonio. Allan attended Central Catholic High School and was a Cadet Lieutenant Colonel in one of two brigades in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps.

Allan's medical history – a malignant tumor successfully removed from a leg when he was 8 months old – disqualified him from appointment to a military academy. Determined to follow in his father's military footsteps, Allan attended The University of Texas on an ROTC scholarship, becoming Brigade Commander and a Distinguished Military Graduate.

While attending UT, Allan started dating the love of his life, Pam Blakey, a San Antonio Incarnate Word High School grad also studying at Texas.

Allan graduated, was commissioned into the U.S. Army, married his lovely bride Pam and started UT law school all within a few months in 1967.

Before Allan graduated law school in 1970, the handsome couple were blessed with two sons (Chris & Andy). After earning his law degree, Captain DuBois reported to JAG School in Virginia, followed by work in Washington, D.C., as a Commissioner to the Army Court of Review and then as a lawyer in the Defense Appellate Division, earning the Meritorious Service Medal.

While living on the East Coast, two beautiful daughters (Lisa & Becky) arrived. With the Army downsizing and promotions limited, Allan and Pam decided to return to San Antonio to be closer to family and raise their four children.

Allan excelled as a civil trial attorney with the law firm of Lang, Ladon, Green, Coghlan & Fisher. After 25 years, Allan and his friend and mentor, Paul Green, started their own firm before Green's passing and Allan working as a solo practitioner and mediator.

Allan dedicated much of his time to the State Bar of Texas and San Antonio Bar Association, serving on various committees through the years, board of directors and ultimately as SABA president and SBOT president.

Inspired by his own commitment to recovery from alcoholism, Allan was driven to help those struggling with addiction and mental health. Throughout his 30 years of sobriety, Allan volunteered with organizations such as the San Antonio Council on Alcohol and Drug Awareness, receiving SACADA's inaugural Community Champion Award. He was instrumental in growing awareness of the Texas Lawyers Assistance Program and Texas Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers.

On holidays, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas, Allan would quietly leave the house in the evening to attend AA meetings and help others in recovery.

He also supported military veterans through pro bono work and as a founding member of Texas Lawyers for Texas Veterans.

In 2021, Allan was honored as an "Outstanding 50 Year Lawyer" by the State Bar of Texas, recognizing his successful legal career as well as his tireless efforts in support of the bar and these worthy programs.

Of all his professional and personal accomplishments, though, Allan always said his proudest achievement was persuading Pam to marry him.

While his skills and integrity earned him respect in the courtroom, Allan's kindness and compassion defined him as a leader and mentor not only within the legal community but among family and friends.

He always would greet you with a smile, lend an ear, engage in conversation and provide some practical advice. He was a great listener – attentive and interested in what the individual in front of him had to say.

Allan was an avid reader of books and the daily newspaper, a captivating storyteller and excellent orator who always had a yellow legal pad and pen within reach.

Allan cherished time with family – whether at the neighborhood pool teaching the youngsters to swim, attending kids' sporting events, family vacations, holiday gatherings with relatives, fishing, hunting, campfire camaraderie, or just sitting down for Sunday dinner.

When Allan and Pam honeymooned on the Texas Coast, it proved to be a precursor of annual family beach vacations on South Padre Island. Body surfing, building sand castles, walks on the beach, seashell hunting, late-night fishing on the pier, early morning bay fishing, chasing sand crabs, cornhole matches and just soaking up the sun with a good book were some of Allan's favorite beach pastimes.

He enjoyed competing in neighborhood tennis leagues, golfing and water sports. He was a weekend pitmaster who could smoke or grill with the best of them. On cold days, Allan would simmer a mean pot of chili, bean soup or homemade spaghetti sauce. Allan and Pam were known to tear it up on the dance floor at events; and, in recent years, it was a family affair as they were joined by kids and grandkids cutting a rug until the band played its last song. Allan loved his San Antonio Spurs and Green Bay Packers, but also was a diehard Longhorn who bled burnt orange. But with children and grandchildren venturing to rival schools, he became more tolerant of Baylor Bears, Sooners, Red Raiders, Razorbacks and even Aggies entering the home and rooting for their teams. But, in the end, we know he was our biggest fan … and now will be cheering us all on from above.

Allan was preceded in death by his parents Col. Keith F. and Lavira "Vi" DuBois, daughter Lisa DuBois, daughter-in-law Cindy Kosser DuBois, father- and mother-in-law Col. George A. and Genevieve Blakey, and brother-in-law Jim Riovo.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Pam; three children (spouse), Christopher DuBois, Andrew DuBois (Kirsten) and Rebecca Fralix (Jeff); eight siblings, Kathryn Boenisch (Ken), Mary McKay, Barbara Riovo, Diane Carol (Dale), Joan Vorauer (Herbert), Christine McComas, Paul DuBois (Lisa) and Patricia DuBois; 14 grandchildren, Madeline DuBois, Kailey Fralix, Devin Sellers, Brooke Sellers, Megan Fralix, Matt York, Hunter DuBois, Brandon Sellers, Abigail DuBois, Brett DuBois, Josh DuBois, Cecily York, Zach DuBois and Macie Fralix; two great-grandchildren, Lailani Flores and Iliana Flores; brother-in-law George Blakey Jr. and wife Tommie; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral mass will be celebrated Friday, January 28, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church, 20523 Huebner Road, San Antonio, TX 78258, with military honors and reception following.
