Barbara Kutil Herden lived her life with joy, energy, and a smile that brightened every place she went. Born, raised, and a lifelong resident of San Antonio, Barbara built a life full of purpose, faith, and fun, and she shared all of it generously with the people she loved.
After her early years with the Federal Reserve Bank, Barbara spent much of her career at Broadway Bank, where she formed close friendships and eventually retired. She brought the same care and diligence to her work that she brought to every part of her life.
Barbara married the love of her life, Herman J. Herden, and together they shared 43 years of a lively, loving partnership full of humor and loyalty. Their San Antonio home hosted countless swim parties and celebrations, while their retreat in Bandera, affectionately known as "The Place," became a favorite spot for relaxed gatherings with family and friends. They took great pride in both properties, each filled with memories of laughter and connection.
She is survived by her husband, Herman; daughter, Katerina Herden; granddaughters, Kaela and Hannah; her sister, Carolyn Kutil Reneau; her bonus kids, Ginger Reneau Lambert and Jason Reneau; and many nieces, nephews, and grands who were touched by her warmth and encouragement.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers Lonnie, James, and Louis Kutil III.
Barbara had a vibrant, outgoing personality and an independent spirit. She was known for her upbeat handwritten cards, which she sent faithfully for every occasion, and for her signature birthday phone calls singing the entire "Happy Birthday" song, a tradition so well known that receptionists at workplaces knew exactly who was calling each year. She was beautiful inside and out, and her faith in Jesus guided her every day.
A short graveside memorial service will be held Sunday, November 2, at 2:00 p.m. at Santa Clara Catholic Cemetery, 3598 Gin Road, Seguin, Texas. A barbecue gathering will follow at the Clemens School House, 7390 Gin Road, Marion, Texas.
