C.A. Stubbs Obituary

January 6, 1923 - December 22, 2017
C.A. Stubbs, resident of San Antonio for over 75 years, departed this life on Friday, December 22, 2017, to be with the Lord, his beloved wife, family and many friends. He was born January 6, 1923 near Dripping Springs, Texas.
He came to San Antonio at the beginning of the World War II and became involved in what was to become the world of computer science with the Army Air Corps. During the war, he served with the 15th Detachment, 84th Machine Records Unit, comprised of small groups of military personnel strategically located in the principal military installations around the country. After his military service, he served later as a Civilian Computer Systems Officer at Kelly AFB. He quickly became highly skilled in IBM Punch Card Technology, forerunner of the computer age.

After WWII he was asked to accept an executive position with the largest wholesale grocery distribution in San Antonio at the time. His role was to use the latest in IBM Business Machine Technology to improve billing, inventory and distribution to the many retails stores in San Antonio, Central and South Texas.

Upon completion of the previous assignment, Mr. Stubbs returned to Kelly AFB as a project officer to play a leading role in conversion of air force manual record keeping to IBM Punch Cards and later to giant computers. Here he served as chief of the management division of this massive computer center.

After 31 years of service as a computer systems officer, he returned to the private sector as executive vice president and general manager at a large real estate company.
Beginning in 1980 Mr. Stubbs began a new career as a fighter of government waste and the growing burden of taxation, spending and debt being imposed on productive citizens of Texas and the United States.

He was Founder, President and CEO of the Homeowner Taxpayer Association of Bexar County, the largest such organization formed in San Antonio. Millions of dollars in savings are attributed to the efforts of this organization.

He was the Former President and CEO of the Texas Association of Concerned Taxpayers where organizations were formed in 123 Texas Counties.

He served as an unpaid lobbyist before the Texas State Legislature for more than five years.

As a relentless advocate of reduced government and taxes, he regularly appeared on talk radio, TV, and in local newspapers. He is a former columnist for the oldest legal newspaper in San Antonio, The Commercial Recorder.

He was the Texas State Chairman Emeritus of Citizens Against Government Waste, the nation's largest tax watch organization.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 55 years, Barbara; parents, Reverend and Mrs. O.V. Stubbs; brothers, Wilton and Ollis Stubbs; and sister, Euva Barnett.

Survivors include a brother, T.D. Stubbs and wife, Margaret; a sister, Theda Yager and husband, Donald; and a host of nieces and nephews.

My condolences to the entire Stubbs family. I met C.A. when my grandmother was selling her house in SanAntonio. C.A. was her real estate agent and fit in just like a relative that I hadn't met before. He was funny as a rubber crutch ! His sense of humor was wonderful ! When my grandmother came back to San Antonio, she sought out C.A. to find another house for her, and he did. We didn't see each other for a few years but when we saw each other again, I had the pleasure of seeing him again when he was a guest at the SanAntonio Press Club of which I was a member, and he played piano for us at the "Upper Muldoons" bar in the Gunter hotel. He played for two hours and we had a wonderful time !! He was a man on a mission, that continues still today with the Home Owners Taxpayers Association that initially got the ire of a formal city councilman, which years later went down in flames, but c.A. was a real "steady Eddie" he was not changed by all of the publicity that would surround him he was just the same, just a great guy that my family and I were proud to call a friend and a Masonic Brother. Have a good rest, brother C.A. you have well deserved it. Your friend, Steve

C. A Stubbs was raised a Master Mason in Albert Pike Lodge No. 1168 on Jan 1, 1964.
Hie was a long time member and was awarded The Golden Trowel Award June 23, 1998 for his service to Masonry and the San Antonio Community. I was there that day and was astounded that he was an accomplished piano and organ player. He played for us at the Banquet in his honor. He addressed us and told GREAT jokes. A very accomplished speaker. The brethren of our lodge will miss him and we pray for his family.

It was my honor to play C.A. in the SPJ Gridiron shows. He was a good sport about it, and even lent me his hat to wear during the performances. His high degree of integrity is missing from our current political landscape.

Mr. Stubbs I'm going to miss you so much! You were my long time patient, as I've known you since Dr. Weiner's office. You always had a bright smile on your face and would stop everyone in the waiting room and say here's my Mandy the Dandy, with a huge hug. I'll miss you so much and was sad to see of your passing. I know your home with Barbara and lots and lots of friends to celebrate your arrival. I'll never forget you
