Charles Dwayne Harral
September 19, 1932 - March 22, 2025
We feel an immense loss at announcing the death of our loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle and friend, Charles Dwayne Harral, on March 22, 2025, at the age of 92. We are thankful for sharing many years with such a delightful man. Dwayne, as everyone called him, was born on September 19,1932 in Fort Stockton, Texas in his family home to Vida and George Harral.
He and his older brother Gene were graduates of Fort Stockton High School. Dwayne played football, basketball, tennis and marched in the band. He graduated from high school in 1951 and from Texas Tech University in 1954, with a degree in animal science. On July 16th, 1953, he married Mary Hale, also of Fort Stockton. They loved and supported one another for seventy-one plus years.
The couple relocated three times in their first four years of marriage. They lived in Lubbock where Dwayne finished his last year of college, then at Great Lakes Military Training Center where he served as a quarter master, and finally to San Antonio for Dwayne's job as an Assistant Sales Manager for Roeglein Meats in 1957. In those four years, their two sons Glen and Dudley were born. San Antonio would be their home for the next sixty-eight years.
Dwayne's professional life was varied. While serving in the National Guard through 1961, he began a business, L & H Meatpacking Company in 1960. He remained in the meatpacking business until 1985 when he went into the Cattle Feeding Business. He served as President of both the Southwest Meatpackers and the Texas Cattle Feeders Associations. He retired in 2002.
Dwayne, an avid outdoorsman, enjoyed deer and elk hunting in Fort Stockton, Vermejo Park, New Mexico, and Wyoming. He snow skied on vacations in Snowmass, Colo., and taught his grandsons, Charles and Nick, how to ski. Mary and Dwayne made trips to Australia and Europe. In January of 1997, they traveled to Alaska to see the Aurora Borealis. Their most amazing venture was a road trip via their jeep to the Arctic Circle in the summer of 1980.
In retirement, Dwayne and Mary enjoyed designing a vacation home in Cloudcroft, New Mexico. They eagerly anticipated the cooler temps there and escaping the summer heat in San Antonio. Entertaining family and friends in Cloudcroft was their gift.
Dwayne, always devoted to family and friends, maintained an attitude of positivity bolstered by his faith in God. He served the Lord at Alamo Heights Disciple of Christ Church, and then at Northern Hills United Methodist Church from 2005 until his passing.
Dwayne is survived by his wife Mary; two sons Glen Harral (partner David Hammar), Dudley Harral (Debbie); grandsons: Charles Harral (Jenny), Nicholas Harral (Bianca); and eight great grandchildren: Trenton, Charlotte, Evelyn and Brennan Smith, Nico, Dalton, Lincoln and Zoe Harral, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dwayne's celebration of life service will be on Thursday, April 3rd at Northern Hills United Methodist Church at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Bob Allen officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Northern Hills United Methodist Church, the
American Cancer Society or a
charity of your choice.
