He received a fellowship in Gastroenterology, at The University of South Florida, Tampa, in 1991. He practiced medicine for ten years in Charlotte, North Carolina. In 2000, he moved to San Antonio, Texas and practiced medicine until he was diagnosed with brain cancer. He had a life-long love for music and enjoyed playing the piano and organ. At age fourteen, Clay began to play for church congregations, beginning with St. Andrew Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Odessa, Texas. He had the wonderful opportunity to travel extensively throughout the world; and he considered the highlight of his professional career going on a medical mission to Belarus, where he spent two and one-half weeks administering medical care to survivors of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. The unquestionable highlight of his life was his ability to adopt a daughter, Lauren Nicole Wayman, in 1998. She brought an immeasurable amount of joy and fulfillment into his life. Dr. Wayman was a member of the Stone Oak Presbyterian Church and participated in their music program prior to his illness. He is survived by his daughter, Lauren Nicole Wayman of San Antonio, Texas; his mother Mrs. Neva McSpadden Wayman, of Little Rock, Arkansas; his father and step-mother, Dr. Sam and Donna Wayman, of Hemphill, Texas; and many friends and family members. He was grateful for those who cared for him, and always tried to acknowledge with profound appreciation each of the kind cards, flowers, and personal expressions of affection that were demonstrated during his illness. Additionally, he was especially thankful for his medical partners and office staff at San Antonio Digestive Disease Associates for their unwavering support and love.
