Colleen Williams

WILLIAMS
Colleen Ingram Williams was born May 23, 1924 to Robert Ingram and Jean Davenport. In 1946 she married Elgin Williams, who predeceased her. She died peacefully at home of congestive heart failure on December 14, 2013. A lifelong Texan, Presbyterian, and Democrat, Colleen took great pride in being born a Davenport. She attended Jefferson High School, the University of Texas, Our Lady of the Lake, and finally Tulane University to complete her Ph. D in social work. She practiced social work for many years, and then taught at the Worden School of Social Service. After retiring, she continued to serve her community through organizations such as the House of Neighborly Service , the Ella Austin Community Center, and the San Antonio YWCA. . Colleen found a spiritual home at Alamo Heights Presbyterian Church, where she encouraged the church's mission work and served as Clerk of the Session. Many people remember Colleen's avid intellect and sharp wit. She relished interesting and amusing conversation. She was a devoted reader who found joy, solace, and inspiration in books. She loved opera, The Book of Hours, , Florence, acrostics, Edward Gorey, Iris Munro , Henry James, C S Lewis, the prophet Elijah, Texas wildflowers, Evelyn in Two-and-a-Half Men, cheese enchiladas at Los Barrios, Padre Island, the Chicago Cubs, and making lists. Colleen was exemplary in handling life's troubles with courage and grace. She is survived by her children Brett, Bobby, and Lucy, her grandchildren John Henry, Chris, and Maggie, her brother-in-law Bob Williams, her sister-in-law Doris Williams, her nephew Bill Van Cleve, and many loving cousins and friends. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday December 18 at 11 AM at Alamo Heights Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers please make a contribution to a group dedicated to easing the struggles of the poor.
