Colonel Weir Obituary

Colonel Frances Weir
December 14, 1927 - September 14, 2023
Colonel Frances "Tina" Weir, US Army Transportation Corp - Retired, died on September 14, 2023 in a local hospital at the age of 95. She was born on December 14, 1927 in Winchester, VA to Stanley & Frances Weir.

She graduated from James Madison University in 1949. Following graduation she enlisted in the US Army and was accepted into Officers Candidate School. She served from 1949-1977, attaining the rank of Colonel. She was the first woman to command a brigade size male unit and was later selected by the Department of the Army to command a predominately male brigade.

Colonel Weir served in Vietnam, Europe, the Pentagon, and at multiple bases in the US. Her commendations and decorations include the Legion of Merit with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Joint Service Commendation Medal.

She was diminutive in stature but mighty of will. A commanding officer once commented that "she may wear the smallest boot but she delivers the biggest kick". The Pentagon Newspaper wrote that Colonel Weir paved the way for women military commanders of the future with her excellent leadership.

Colonel Weir will be greatly missed by all who knew her and is saluted by them for her service. Her body was donated to the UTHSCSA to advance medical education and research. Per her request there will be no funeral but her remains will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
