MOAD
David Leonard Moad

David Leonard Moad was born in Fremont, Nebraska March 1, 1938 and entered into death December 23, 2009. He spent most of his childhood in Fremont, graduating from Fremont High School and attending Midland College in Fremont. He joined the United States Air Force in 1958 and spent most of his time at Randolph AFB in San Antonio where he was a surgical technician. He became ill and was discharged from the service in April 1961. David and Elizabeth Ann Rawlings were married July 29, 1961 in Stockdale, Texas. In March of 1962 David was diagnosed with a life threatening congenital heart condition. On March 16, 1962 he had one of the early heart surgeries to repair the condition. His body was suspended, frozen in ice, to perform the surgery. The operation was preformed in Denver, CO in an observation operating setting. In the next year David's operation was one of four featured in a national television show. In the summer of 1963 Dave and Elizabeth moved back to San Marcos, TX where Dave attended Southwest Texas State University. He received a Bachelor's degree in Commercial Art and later a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Art. In 1965 Dave, Elizabeth, and their two children Michele Elizabeth and Davy Paul moved to Universal City, TX. They taught in the Schertz-Cibolo Universal City ISD for twelve years. Dave taught drafting at Samuel Clemens High School and loved Clemens dearly. Dave's final eighteen years of teaching were spent at Alamo Heights High School in San Antonio. He taught drafting and industrial arts. Dave was an extremely accomplished wood instructor and guided his Alamo Heights students to many state titles. After retirement Dave pursued his first love, painting, and became a successful artist. He participated in the Texas State Arts and Crafts Fair for five years, was affiliated with Galleria II, RAC Gallery and currently with the San Antonio Art League and Museum. His art work is currently shown at the Weems Galleries in Albuquerque, NM and has been there for ten years. Dave was pleased to participate in the International Cow Parade artwork, painting two life sized cows, the Southwest Cow in the Houston Cow Parade and Tres Amigos in the San Antonio Cow Parade. Dave did a series of chihuahua paintings based on his beloved Sissy. He was asked to participate in the Texas exhibit in Washington DC for George W Bush's first inauguration in 2001 with the Texas Chihuahua. Dave loved the Southwest and his native American heritage. He was known for his free art style and his use of bright vivid colors. Dave is survived by his wife Elizabeth Rawlings Moad, his special daughter Michele Moad-Hageman, son-in-law Scott Hageman, Bubba's two special granddaughters, Millie Moad-Hageman and Madi Moad-Hageman, his #1 son, Davy Paul Moad, daughter-in-law Monika Perez-Moad, his brother Jack Moad and sister-in-law Judy Moad of Fort Collins, CO, his nephew Matt Moad of Las Vegas NV and niece Marla Harkleroad of Seattle, WA. He was proceeded in death by his parents Bill and Agnes Moad and his beloved in-laws Paul Ed Rawlings and Jewell Rawlings Phares, and many, many special friends. Dave will be remembered as a kind, happy, jolly man and will be sorely missed by all. Funeral services were held December 26, 2009 at the First Baptist Church, Stockdale, TX and burial followed at the Stockdale Cemetery. Pall bearers include Davy Moad, Scott Hageman, Kenneth Hairgrove, Chris Burkhalter, Sherve Maranto and Michael Perez. You are welcome to sign the online guestbook at www.finchfuneralchapels.com.

Dear Moad Family,

Please accept my condolences on Dave's passing. We taught together at Alamo Heights High School and I will always remember his wit. He was an excellent teacher and his work lives on through the many students he taught.

Dear Moad Family: I will always remember Dave as a great friend, a great neighbor, and a great artist who was one of the most caring persons I've known. A true gentleman, a devoted family man loved by all and a great American who will not be forgotten by all who knew him. Leonard Maranto.
