DOUGLAS WILLIS SMITH JR
October 27, 1939 - November 23, 2025
Douglas Willis Smith, Jr. passed away in San Antonio, Texas on Sunday, November 23, 2025, at the age of 86. He was born in Corpus Christi on October 27, 1939, to Douglas Willis "Dougie" Smith and Vera Dee "Deedo" Morris Smith. After marrying, Doug's parents moved to Corpus Christi, where Dougie worked in his grandfather's accounting firm. Doug's sister Sandi was born a year later. The family returned to San Antonio when Dougie was called into military service. Doug and Sandi spent much of their childhood with grandparents in the Alamo Heights and Jefferson neighborhoods, where Doug learned about his Texas roots, cooking, music, faith, and accounting.
The family later moved to Shreveport, Louisiana, where Doug attended Bird High School and discovered his lifelong passion for golf. He attended Texas A&M University before transferring to the University of Oklahoma, pledging Kappa Alpha and becoming a devoted Sooner.
When his parents moved back to San Antonio, his father asked him to help start their metal machinery business, Dosco ("Two" Dougs). Doug completed his studies at St. Mary's University and soon met his future wife, Sally Ann Mayfield. After a long courtship, they eloped to Mexico and remained loving partners for nearly 60 years.
They welcomed their son, Douglas Willis "Tres" Smith III, and later their daughter, Martita Ann. After Martita's birth, Dougie passed away suddenly, leaving Doug to run their 200-employee company. He grew Dosco until selling it in 1983, then invested in the stock market and real estate before purchasing Jon Hart Design in 1988. With Sally Ann, and later Tres and Martita, they built the company into a meaningful family venture. Doug sold Jon Hart in 2006. Tragically, Tres passed away soon after from non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
In the years that followed, Doug focused on golf, travel, and investments, and welcomed a son-in-law, Colin David Fleming, and his grandson, Conall Douglas Fleming, who lovingly called him "Grumpa."
Doug cherished playing golf across the U.S. and abroad, especially at The San Antonio Country Club, where he formed lifelong friendships, founded the "Wednesday Game," and was inducted into the club's Golf Hall of Fame. His accomplishments included qualifying for six USGA events, playing in the British Amateur, serving on the USGA Rules Committee for 27 years, receiving the Granger Award, and serving as President of the SACC Men's Golf Association. He was also the 2014 Senior Club Champion.
Beyond golf, Doug loved reading, cooking, travel, Sunday crosswords, fine dining, and OU football. He was known for sharing his passions freely and for his colorful attire. He also belonged to the Rockport Country Club, Oak Hills Country Club, The Bachelor Club, The German Club, The Merry Knights, and The Conopus Club.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Sandi, and his son Tres. He is survived by his wife, Sally Ann; daughter Martita and husband Colin; grandson Conall; cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family.
A service to honor Doug will be held on Monday, December 15th at 2 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church in San Antonio. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The First Tee of Greater San Antonio, Landa Branch Library, or the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America.
