DR. DAVID SHULMAN Obituary

Dr. David George Shulman, 78, died peacefully on August 7, 2021 in San Antonio, Texas.

Dr. Shulman was born in Dallas, Texas to Harry and Nellie Jane Shulman. He grew up in Kilgore, Texas and graduated from Kilgore High School in 1961. He attended Sewanee College from which he transferred to the University of Texas at Austin. He went on to graduate from the University of Texas at Austin, then attended the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston receiving his PhD in Anatomy. Dr. Shulman received his medical degree from Creighton Medical School in Omaha, Nebraska in 1973. He completed his ophthalmology internship and residency at Scott and White Memorial Hospital in Temple, Texas in 1977.

Dr. Shulman married the love of his life, Rebekah Sterling Alexander, on February 2, 1966. They had two children, Lucia Shulman Redmond and Birge David Shulman. He loved spending time with his five grandchildren Thomas, Rebekah, Ava, Kathryn and David.

Dr. Shulman practiced ophthalmology in the San Antonio area for more than forty years. He was a passionate advocate for his patients and his profession. He was principle investigator in many clinical research trials which resulted in FDA approved medications. Dr. Shulman was also a clinical professor of ophthalmology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. He served as president of the Bexar County Medical Society, president of the San Antonio Society of Ophthalmology, president of the Texas Ophthalmological Association (TOA) and then legislative chair for more than twenty years. Dr. Shulman was the founding chair of EYE-PAC, the largest state ophthalmological political action committee in the United States.

In 2011, Dr. Shulman received the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Senior Achievement Award and in 2013 he was presented with the Hall of Fame Award for his lifelong commitment to patient advocacy and support of public policies ensuring the highest quality of medical and surgical eye care. In 2020, the Bexar County Medical Society presented Dr. Shulman with their highest award, the Golden Aesculapius Award, for a lifetime of distinguished service.

Dr. Shulman is survived by his wife, Rebekah Shulman; his daughter Lucia Shulman Redmond, her husband Dr. James Redmond and grandchildren Thomas, Rebekah and Ava Redmond; his son Birge David Shulman, his wife Julia Webster Shulman and grandchildren Kathryn and namesake David Shulman; and his sister Molly Shulman Kellogg and her husband Frederic R. Kellogg.

He was preceded in death by his father, Harry Shulman; his mother Nellie Jane Shulman; and his brother Robert Bilderback.

With deepest sympathy. He will be missed. Met Dr. Shulman when I was 17 with a severe infection - in the 70´s. He went out of his way to help me and I knew from there forward he was a really caring doctor and loved what he did. Saw him for years and referred many whom loved him as well. Truly missed.

I first met David when he transferred to UT and affiliated with our chapter of the fraternity he had joined at Sewanee. Even then he was as warm and courteous to everyone he met as he was known to be as a practicing physician in San Antonio. I was very sorry to learn of his death.

I, too, was a longtime patient of Dr. Shulman, having complete faith and trust in his treatment of my rare eye difficulties. He was my friend, too, as he was a gentle caring soul. I had the privilege of getting to meet some of his granddaughters. I don't know who can replace him as a doctor. He cared what we all felt. RIP my friend!
